455 Block check
Tell me what you think of this thing that looks like a crack at the bottom of the bore. It's a 455 block I'd like to use for a build. I bought it several years ago and had it cleaned and magged and it is supposed to be ok but later I spotted this. I think I asked about it previously and P-dude replied but I can not find that thread anywhere. Maybe I dreamed it? LOL Anyway I thought he told me it was not uncommon and ok? I dont know, so I'm asking again.

Thats a normal casting divet that shows up from time to time, but just to make sure it does not turn into a crack I would polish it over with a 120 girt sanding roll which the shop you take it to for machine work should be able to handle.
It will make no difference to the support of the piston skirt to have a low spot way down there at the bottom of the bore.

Ok, thanks. I'm ready to start cleaning up the casting flash in the lifter galley with a carbide burr and then a stone. Should I leave this divot for the the machine shop or go ahead and hit it myself like above? I think I'd like to do it myself but then I'd like the machine shop to double check it and mag that area again.

If you are talking about the little notch at the very bottom of the cylinder, I agree there is nothing to be concerned about. Like you was told just polish it it out when you do your other deburring.

If it was me Id have an additional mag done and show them that area when you drop it off. Make absolutely sure that they fine tooth comb that spot. It really should have been noticed on the first test. It could probably be die grinded back to the end if the crack if it's only a 1/4" or so. Personally, I wouldn't leave it even if it's only 1/8" then stops. The grinding into it with a very small radius will prevent it from continuing. and then quick polish as mentioned above. All of this done before block work of course.
