The spring in hose doesn’t touch the water pump or radiator fittings . Did you read this post?

You can buy the lower hose spring from our host- as stated it needs to be in there to prevent hose collapse at cruise rpm. Install a sacrificial anode in place of the draincock to mitigate potential corrosion issues.

You are getting many good tips hear that should resolve your issue.

Make sure the coolant tubes (item 105), (P/N 9796347) where installed when engine was assembled.

The OP has an 8 bolt pump, not the 11 bolt pump shown here with the water tubes.

I removed that dual fan/shroud configuration and installed a new FlexALite fan setup and am going to see how things go soon as I get a minute.
I am really excited about this fan setup.
My last resort will be the factory fan setup.
More to come.

So just another opinion which I believe is what you are looking for. In addition to all the great posts
above, Your blue impeller on your water pump doesn’t look like most I’ve seen. Some of these aftermarket pump impellers are junk and I think you may have one. While I’ve only had a couple of 11 bolt water pumps on my 69 judge and my 68 455 firebird the pump impeller design is way different and I think more efficient at moving coolant. I’ll see if I can post
a better designed impeller that moves more water.

The high flow Milodon pump I put on my 455 firebird has the same impeller as the middle one in these pics. I’m a big fan of these style impellers as it cured my overheating problem.

If your new fan and shroud don’t fix your heating problem then here is something else to try.

Did you feel a BIG difference in wind under the hood?

I think those tubes are used in all 326-455 Pontiac engines regardless of water pump design.
I had the exact problem with a clients car that had an engine replacement. The mechanic who did the install tried everything to correct the overheating issue. Eventually the job was assigned to me. After careful inspection of everything that was done I asked “did you install the coolant passage tubes?” After a long blank stare he replied “what tubes “. A box of leftover parts was returned from the engine rebuilding shop and there was the tubes. I installed them, problem solved. In my many years of in the Pontiac hobby I have seen this scenario several times. I’m not insisting I’m right, but I strongly suggest that the installation of the tubes be verified.

Nope. The water sleeves were not used in the 8 bolt pump. The 69 and up went to the 11 bolt pump that uses the sometimes missing sleeves.

I do not have any apple to apple comparisons, but some have said the 11 bolt configuration is more efficient vs the 8 bolt. Butler sells the full kit to upgrade from 8 bolt to an 11 bolt pump.

Knowledge is power. That’s why I like this forum. Experienced Pontiac people sharing information. My story involved a ‘75 GP with a 400. The other instances were tech articles that I have read over the years. Never a mention of 8 bolt vs. 11 bolt pumps. Thanks for setting it straight.

I have an update and now we can put a period at the end of this thread. My overheating problem is solved .

After installing the flexalite fan setup, and after letting the engine idle for a couple hours, and after driving around town for a while, my temp does not go over 190 unless I shut it down, then it quickly goes back down.

It cycles nicely between about 180°-190° and stays in the 'green' on my gauge.. The fan is very powerful and very quiet.

Thank you for all the great advice. I'm always learning more and more on here
John

Great to hear John! I'm experiencing the same this with that Flex-A-Light Black Magic.

It's a good fan for a first gen.

That's great news. I like the clean install with the brackets up top - did you fabricate those? Are they attached to the top of the radiator? How did you attach at the bottom? Any close up pics?
