69 Firebird 400 / 4 BBL w/AC rebuild suggestions...
So I put some money together to get my already running 400 Poncho motor rebuilt. It's been rebuilt already with 9.5 : 1 pistons, but it's got the stock heads. The Q-Jet has been rebuilt but it just never seems to kick in the secondaries.
Is it smarter to get that diagnosed first, and see if I can salvage the Q-Jet or is there enough good reasons to get the Edelbrock top end kit with D-Style heads, cam, etc? Anyone done this to their 400, and if so how were the results? |

FIX the QJET first. Then try it for a while before you spend the $$$.
There's an enormous difference in the way they run when the carb is not working well and when it is working well.
If you were closer to Las Vega$, we could help........ |

I know of SMI in Fullerton, thanks very much. Does anyone know how to contact Bill Baker of Fullerton? Apparently he's a mobile mechanic that comes to you. If I just have a linkage problem it might be easier to have him come to me to diagnose the problem.

I'm happy to report that a local Pontiac guy found the problems with the carb. Just needed the choke linkage fixed, the secondaries on the Q-Jet linkage was loosened up, and the TH400 kick down switch was out of adjustment. It was a fun ride home actually accelerating much better when I pressed down on the gas pedal. So thanks to Bill Baker, V/P of the local Pontiac (POCI) club here in So Cal for getting this car moving!
