Might want to check out the bushings on the pedal assembly too. Make sure they're in good shape so the pedal does the same thing every time. The brace is a good idea, however, if everything is right, that part of the linkage shouldn't be seeing a load.

I see you have no carpet under your pedal. Previous owner put a new carpet kit in mine. I may need to cut a slit underneath the pedal and see if that works.

I can’t post a pic yet but it looks like I have Dynamat and a plush red carpet all the way up to the top of my pedal where it has to press down.

Ok, got a pair of pics of the gas pedal and carpet. When I press the pedal the carpet stops it on the right side from going down. It looks like it has both Dynamat, and thicker carpet than stock.

Looks like your Firebird has a different gas pedal setup than a GTO. Your carpet does look thicker than mine though

Yeah, you're right on the gas pedal. Well, if this was going to be easy to fix it wouldn't be one of my cars. LOL Thanks again!

Speedo or tach cable from the floor, I'm guessing.

Check out this post. In 68 and 69 the pedal pivot bracket mounted on the firewall is plastic, they crack and allow a lot of movement. Look down at the firewall side while someone moves the pedal or see how much you can stir the pot from the pedal side.

After a lot of work, it turns out the electric choke wasn't set right. The carb was rebuilt, the accelerator linkage was bent, the carb was running too rich, and the carb cable hold down was bad.
No wonder I didn't have Wide Open Throttle. All fixed now, it moves pretty good! And the idle at 600 rpm sounds decent now with the carb fix and the new Fantasy Muffler 2 1/4" pipes and Dyno Max muffler with no resonator. Short 3 second clip of the idle. http://www.scumbackspeakers.com/69bird/69idle.mov Of course, during testing Thursday the speedo cable broke. LOL |

very common problem and and simple fix, get a small hose clamp and lay downunder dash, pull throttle cable ball towards you about a inch, put the hose clamp over it and tighten it up, all your doing is making a spacer, you r gas pedal will down be slightly further from the carpet and it will give you enough extra pull distance to get 4bbl all way open

Thanks rtanner, but the gas pedal linkage was bent 120 degrees, not the factory 90. The plastic piece holding the pedal was flexing as well. So we got new linkage, new carb clamp, and then a 1/2" plywood spacer was built to sit under the pedal to get the right angle and not flex. It works great now on part throttle, floored and it kicks down great to lower gears.
Of course, on the test drive last Thursday the speedo cable gave up the ghost. I guess it was tired after 50 years. LOL |
