69 Firebird 400 front shocks...KYB, Monroe, Gabriel, any favorites and why?
So sure, as soon as I fix the cooling system, the front shocks start to squeak going over a speed bump in the parking lot.
I guess the fronts are KYB, but they're 10-11 years old. I would say I need a "better than stock performance" shock, but not track or racing. The Bird has the TA sized front sway bar, a rear sway bar, and the full TA suspension upgrades already. Everyone has an opinion on front shocks....any reason to go with anything more exotic than KYB shocks (KYB KG4515 Gas-A-Just) or move up to the shocks from Monroe 58273 Load Adjusting, they have col springs around the shock tube. Pontiac suspension gurus...let's hear it! It's a 69 400 with factory A/C, auto trans, 3.55 gears, variably ration P/S, front power disc brakes. Thanks if advance! Jim |

I have the Bilsteins in my Corvettes, but they're around $85 each from Rock Auto. I was trying to keep this more reasonable.

For a street cruiser I actually prefer to use a run of the mill monroe or similar basic gas shock. Keeps the suspension a little on the soft side and you dont "feel the road" - unless of course that is your objective adjustable is nice if you dont mind spending the dollars and tune to your liking

$85 ea for a Bilstein? You are lucky you don't live in Australia. How does $60 sound for a cartridge of high temp silicon!

I used the Gabriel VST shocks on my 69 bird for a long time with just basic suspension upgrades. Especially at their price point I thought they were darn good.

I feel your pain. The exchange and shipping kill me. The biggest problem is that companies like PayPal or whomever are charging a few points here and a few dollars there on top, and it really adds up. It's robbery if you ask me.

I used KYB gas adjust shocks, made a huge difference in the ride and handling of my 69.
