Scott,
I am just a data junky. I look at a number of other things between dyno pulls than just HP and torque. Stan

Ok. I'll ask him tomorrow if he can send files. 1 thing we did notice and change during the pulls. Initially i was using 15W-40W Royal Purple oil. Oil pressure started around 60 but would go up to 155 psi at the top of the pulls. We changed to BradPenn 10-30 and it came down to starting in the mid 50s and went up to 115 or 116. Still a ton of oil pressure but better than 155 psi.

Scott,
What oil pump are you running and what is the pressure bypass set to? Stan

Running just a home blueprinted 54DS. I increased the pick up tube size. I tested it With a 1/2 dril spinning the pump in a bucket of oil I tested the pump and it went to 65-70 pounds. I installed a small shim in the 60lb pump. Goal was 70 and it was pretty close when i bench tested it.

Sorry to hear you had issues but still good results. It would be nice to see bsfc and fuel lbs/hr

Yeah, I was looking on the screens in the dyno room but didnt see it anywhere on the screens.

1 thing I did see on the screen , I didnt know what it was but didnt think to ask. What is the "rate"? It was set at 450. Not sure what that means.

Just a guess, but the acceleration rate of the test. The 2 most common are 300 and 600. Stan

Did you hold it by hand or make a jig ? Thanks for any help. Getting ready to test my own pump. |

Used a cut off distributor shaft chucked into my electric Makita 1/2" drill. I set the pump in a 1 gallon metal bucket with the body of the pump submerged in oil ( 30 wt ) resting on the bottom of the bucket. I held the pump with my hand to stabilize it in the bucket, and turned on the drill. I have no idea how many RPMs the drill turns but I repeated this test trying different shims in the by pass to set the pressure. . |

Thanks, should not be a problem to make up a plate.
I know people do it on the engine with the pan on, no gaskets but I do not want to clean the pan after than for final assembly. |

So, just so We have this right the crank turns say 7000 rpm, the Cam would turn at half this speed? say 3500. Also, is the only way to increase the oil pump output pressure higher is to shim the spring?
Thanks |

Sounds right as far as the RPM goes. The only way for the oil pump to affect the pressure is the by pass. So changing the shim/spring is all there is really. Bearing clearances will have an effect as will oil viscosity. I believe that even with the by pass open at 65-70 psi like when I bench tested it, the pump is moving more oil than the by pass can handle. Thus accounting for the higher oil pressure. I was surprised that changing from 15/40 to 10/30 made that big of a difference. I have always seen my oil pressure gauge pegged past 100 at the top of a 1/4 mile run. Just never knew exactly how high that was.

If you obtain more details from the dyno would be interesting to see BSFC numbers.
Any photo of the low rise intake? |

I am going to ask about the BSFC numbers and see if the Dyno shop has any of the info on the 6 pulls in a file form they can email to me.

Well there were no BSFC numbers. They said we didnt have it hooked up. Oh well. I got some infor from the dyno. Mainly that the bottom end is solid and i know what timing it likes best. We started at 31* as a base, the spark strap on the plug showed it wanted more timing (açording to thr dyno operator ) so we went to 33-34*, dropped 9 HP to 785. Went to 28* timing and it responded to 790 HP.. Back to 30* and HP went back to 794.
I have a replacement rocker stand already. Thanks to Roland Racing. And the intake rockers are back at Harland Sharp for repair. Then back together and into the car. |

BSFC is a calculation, not something to "hook up". Usually the dyno does it automatically , similar to the way the dyno calculates HP.
