I have a magna fuel 500, electric water pump, 2 electric fans, data recorder, delay box, etc. I don't have a problem........it seems to work.

You for got the alky. How large a radiator you run george? Size of fan? I am planning on upsizing the radiator too. Perhaps the extra capacity will require less fan and pump use.
It all works now. I just think the optimas have very little reserve capacity.

I have a pretty good sized radiator with 2 10" fans. Yes I run Alcohol. The yellow top Optima I have is Group size 31T it has 155 reserved minutes. I like running an alternator for its consistency in volts (very important) 13.5 or so all the way down the track pass after pass after pass.
Seriously there are a bunch of different ways you could go.............this combo has been working for me for years and years.

16v is the way to go. I had an issue with the electric fan popping the fuse. Called the manufacturer and they told me to put a bigger fuse in. I questioned it but it hasn't given me any other problems. Increase your volts you increase resistance.

Do you run an alternator?

I would think with a blower motor your compression is not a big number.
Mines pushing 15-1 and the 16v does better than 12v.
Just saying.

Agreed.........compression makes a differance 16 volts would help the starter. You can still run an alternator for consistency in volts.

The 6 volt starter in my old Baja Bug cranked so fast with 12 volts that I think the engine slowed down at idle. LOL Never hurt the starter.

Throughout the 90s when I was mud dragging, I switched over to 16 volts to compensate for the voltage drop that I encountered from not running an alternator. I was running a 399 cubic inch sbc with 13:1 compression in a 1974 Chevy truck with factory wiring still in place. Typically I would make 6 passes at around 4.4 seconds per pass (150 foot track in 12-18" foot deep mud) plus staging and warm-up. By the end of my 4th pass, the throttle response would get sloppy with the 12v battery in place, but with the 16v it remained crisp throughout the day. I was running a MSD 6AL with a 2 step box, trans brake, ACD air shifter, Moroso water pump drive, large electric fan on the radiator, a Holley blue fuel pump and an electric fan on my trans cooler.

I'm running the XS. Still working great after 3 seasons. I've been very happy with it.

Default FYI

I had been running 12V Optimas in my 72 Olds 442 race car for 8 seasons. Switched to XS 16V last year. Never going back to 12V. Everything is better.

No I don't run an alternator. I just throw the charger on it between rounds. It doesn't take very long to charge it. On alky it doesn't need to cool between rounds and very rarely do I have to run the fan so I don't drain it much between rounds. It will go quite a few rounds if need be without charging though.
