I have a jetaway transmission in my 64 Catalina and I have a few questions.

1. When backing up, my transmission leaks. Not a lot, just drops you can see where it backed up. What would cause that and how can I fix it?

2. Does the jetaway have a kick down gear, if so, I guess mine is not working. Again how can I fix?

Thanks for any help.

your leak is probably caused by the increase in pressure in reverse. maybe a hard seal or gasket. do you know where it's leaking from? if not rent a hoist and put the car in reverse and get under it and check it out. as far as the kickdown i don't know i've not been into one of those tranny's yet, and it's been so long since i've driven one i don't remember. mike

First of all,you probably do not have a Jetaway.Catalina's usually came with a Slim-Jim or Roto-Hydramatic.If your pan is a square, than you do have a Jetaway. So let's assume you have a Slim-Jim.Most of the time, they leak from the pressure regulator O ring,on the front pump, which you can change with the trans in the car.You can go through the oval cover on the passenger side on the front of the trans to get at it.
But I need to know if you have a Slim-Jim or Jetaway and what area of the trans leak is coming from.If it is a Jetaway,it could be the same symptom, the pressure regulator O ring.On the Jetaway the PR is in the drivers side, just behind where the case meets the bell housing,it has a 1/2 inch head on it.
either trans is supposed to have a kickdown. You should make sure your linkage to the trans is connected and your gas pedal is traveling all the way.
I hope I helped. If you need more info, let me know.

My 61 Bonnie has a big leak coming out of the bell housing of the jetaway. It's enough to leave a continuous trail at 5 mph. Any ideas what that might be? I assumed that it had to be a front seal of some sort and have the transmission out of the car now. 4 months ago Autozone told me they had the seal for about 4 bucks. Now they tell me it is unavailable.
