Default Restoring '64 GTO/FS Wood Steering Wheel

I just purchased the '64 GTO and full-size car wood-look steering wheel. It's in pretty good shape but has some of the typical cracks in the fake wood rim. I'd like to restore the wheel myself if I can. Has anyone tried restoring one of these wheels (or another Pontiac steering wheel of the era), and how did it turn out? Is it something you would do again?

I think I can repair the cracks with one of those steering wheel repair kits, but is there a product or technique to replicate the wood-look finish of the steering once the repairs are done? Or I am better off just sending the wheel to someone who will repair it and have it refinished?

Thanks in advance for your help!
