How to cut carpet for seat tracks
This is info that I knew I had seen SOMEWHERE on the net years ago and never could remember where. Well, I happened across it today and thought I'd post it over here. At least it'll be easier for me to find as I rarely visit the Chevelle site.
The info is spread out over two separate threads- http://www.chevelles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=236734 http://www.chevelles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=233094

Great timing Greg. Just pulled seats and console on the way to redoing the sloppy install I did last time. Gonna try and do it right this time and those links sure help. Thanks.

Yeah, it was good timing for me too as my car is almost back from paint. Funny thing is, I was over there on the Chevelle forum looking for something totally unrelated .

When I swapped to the TKO I got great general A-body info over there. I'm now a member just for ease of search purposes.

Yes, there is an excellent knowledge base over there and so much of it applies to our A-body cars. I really joined it back when I was trying to sell my '69 el Camino and only for that reason but they turned out to have some very helpful folks over there.

Here is similar pic I saved from an old PY post.
IIRC said to have been oem carpet.

That's one of the same photos from the Chevelle thread, page two of the first link. Guy over there with user name RAMBO posted it.

Finally got around to doing this. I did use the method outlined in the Chevelle forum. It's going to make for a neat, factory style installation without showing the seat tracks at all.
You are simply making an inverted 'L' cut in the carpet with the seat track mounting stud one inch ahead of, and centered on the 'foot' of the L.

What a coincidence, I'm just getting down to doing mine as well. I never would have thought to slice up a new carpet like that if you hadn't put it out there so thanks again Greg. I'll throw some pics of mine up before the seats go down - hoping to hit the road this weekend.
btw another tip I picked up this time is to use a small soldering iron to "burn" in the holes. Works real nice. Mark O.

Yeah Mark, I saw the soldering iron 'tip'..no pun intended.. out there too. Really keeps the 'runs' down to a minimum. I also used the hook side of a velcro strip on the underside of the overlap. The adhesive side of the velcro tape sticks to the smooth underside of the front carpet and the hook side of the velcro grips the top/loop side of the rear carpet real tight.
Not really needed but it makes it stay in place and lay down flatter on the hump. Plus, it's easily removable which is the whole point of slicing the carpet as I see it. You can pull the carpet in the future without removing the seats.
