Default 4 Oil Filters That Fit the 400 Engine with Headers

When the time comes for an oil and filter change, I can never depend on the local auto parts store to sell me the correct oil filter. So I cross-matched 5 oil filters with the one I have in my 67 GTO (with Doug's Headers) now and bought 5 oil filters on Amazon; 4 of them work. I listed them below with pic's. Of the 4 listed, I like the "Wix 51049" the most. It's the largest which probably equates to the most surface area and most filtering area. I had just enough room to get this filter past the headers.

Wix 51049
Wix 51258
Fram PH25
STP S25

I have mentioned this in a couple other threads, but for those pressed with tight header clearance, I like this Bosch filter. Very well built with high burst strength, and internals seem to be top notch when I have cut them open. Retail price is a little high, but can often find them on sale for under $10 on Amazon.

I normally run remote filters with a bypass system, but always throw the Bosch on when not using the remote setup.

The top purolator filter (I think it may be called Boss) is a very nice size for headers. I get them at Advance Auto

Since the WIX 51049 fits you may add ACDelco PF24 to the list.

PontiacMan: What don't you like about the Fram?

leeklm: Thanks, good to know Bosch is a quality filter.

Wolf: In you 66, do you have the 389? My 67 is a 400, I wonder if the two blocks are compatible when it comes to oil filters. Have you actually spun on the ACDelco PF24? I ask because the 5 oil filters I bought from Amazon, I thought were all compatible. Only four of them spun on.

I everyone could tell us the oil filter you are using, the thread would be quite helpful. I always forget what oil filter I should buy, so in 6 months, this could be a valuable thread to come back to. Perhaps this could become a "sticky"

Default oil filters

I have been using the K&N 2003 oil filter on mine for the last 8 years. I have Doug's headers and have no issues with getting it on and off with the headers, other than oil pouring all over the headers as I unscrew the filter. The K&N filter also has a built on hex nut so an oil filter wrench is not needed, just a ratchet and socket.

It's the second 455 that's in there right now, this one from 1974, the previous from 1971. I had used AC Delco PF58C and PF61F filters before too.

This article has been widely circulated over the years and put the hex on Fram filters long ago.

It's not just that article, all it takes is to look at a dissection online, or in person to see how cheaply they're made over their competition. They still work, but they have been known to collapse internally due to the hydraulic pressure, causing engine damage due to starvation of instantly dumping all of the collected garbage into the internally oiled parts.

Not my first choice of oil filters, especially the $2.97 ones Walmart sells.

I've never had a problem with Fram filters at all.

For the GTO I only use Purolator L30005, as recommended by former PY member Donny Miles, who built the 400 for my GTO.

Jimib, the 389 and 400 blocks are the same. It could be the oil filter bracket that might be different from the 389 block to the 400 block. Tho I could be wrong.

They sell thousands of them every day, doesn't mean they're good quality. Look at the cutaways on Youtube, or cut one apart to see how cheaply they're constructed, then tell me you want a product like that protecting the life blood of the engine.

If the glue of the carboard end cap fails, they collapse internally, you'll never know unless the collapse dumps a ton of dirt into the engine, or restricts oil flow.

Looking at the outside of it when you remove it, tells you absolutely nothing about if the guts failed, or not. Just suffice to say there are better filters made. If you want to use the cheapest filter made, Fram would probably be the choice.

Isn’t there something about an anti drain back valve the doesn’t work on the Fram?

I had a 99 Suburban (I think 5.7) that would knock upon start up for a few seconds with the Wal mart fram filters. Switched to AC Delco from O’Reily’s snd no more knocking at start up.

Usually the the horizontal mounted filters (inline 6) that need anti drain back valves that work well. Upon sitting overnight the filter half empties and needs to re fill the air space created upon start up. This usually related to a noisy startup until all the air moves out of the system and everything gets oil, and pressurized. Horizontal filters are less prone this phenomenon, more times found on V8s, but not always. Poorly constructed drain back valves can aggravate the situation.

Picture is worth a thousand words and all that. Here's my dissection of Fram and Wix filters. Note that the Wix is still fully structurally sound while the Fram is slowly folding in on itself. Fram has cardboard top and bottom while Wix is stamped steel. The Fram was fresh out of the engine at a friend's first 500 mile oil change when I asked if I could have it. The Wix was run a year in one of my cars but had been rinsed off in the parts cleaner so I could keep it for future comparisons. Not sure if the Fram would have survived the solvent bath. Note also the Fram has way fewer pleats and the case was so flimsy it was difficult to cut with the Summit filter cutter.

Default filters

The wix 51049 does not have the drain back valve. The wix 51258 is a little shorter but does have the drain back valve. Billk

Mick, exactly what I posted earlier, a side by side picture shows the inadequate, and cheap construction of the lower end Fram filters. Most people would not use the Fram, if they looked at the innards. As you also touched upon, the cannister metal is a little thicker than tin foil, easily dented or pierced.

There are much better built filters for just about the same money, It has always amazed me that people cheap out on the very heart, and lifeblood of their cars. Even going to an aftermarket filter system at full retail price, is cheap compared to replacing engines in anything.

I believe it was you that answered, many years ago when I asked about experiences with Frantz filters, that about a buddy of yours that raced a BBC used the Frantz filters on his drag car???? Not sure if it was you, or someone else.
