Back up lights
I have a 64 GTO that came with back up lights in the rear bumper. I bought a rechromed bumper a few years ago that did not have the holes for back up lights. My original bumper is a little rough but could be straightened out if I have to. My question is this, did the dealer cut holes in the rear bumper with a hole saw to install back up lights if customer wanted them as a dealer installed accessory? At the factory when they were installed on the line were there two different bumpers? One with back up lights and one without? Thanks for the help!

Yes, the Dealer Kits came with a Template.
The one shown below was from a '65 kit I picked up years ago

I'm sure there were bumpers pre-punched with advanced knowledge of BU lights being ordered.
I have also seen where some cars received a punched bumper but did not have BU lights. In this case, the factory had/used a chrome cap/cover. These are VHTF, to say the least. Note where they mention the Greenlee hole punch, These are still used today.

I cannot imagine using a Greenlee punch on something as thick as a bumper. I also would imagine the chrome would begin to peel at the edges of the cut hole after a few years.

Back in 1976 the '65 Tempest Bumpers where still available from Pontiac I bought one. It came in without the holes for Backup Lights. I took it along with my old original bumper to a machine shop, they cut the backup light holes perfect.

I was working for a Pontiac dealer from 1964-1965. I installed back up light assembly on a 1963 Cat.
After locating the correct placement, I drilled a hole and used a factory tool which then punched out the correct diameter. The tool was two pieces one went on the inside of the bumper and the other attached on the outside. It was tightened with a wrench until it punched out the correct size the back up light was plugged into the existing harness. |

IIRC The shields can be easily installed without dropping the bumper.
I'll have to crawl under the '65's at the shop to re-confirm.

I don't know about a 65, but I was easily able to install the shields on our 64 without removing anything.

Not intending to steal the thread, but mine is a 64, had it on hoist and thought it looked bad so left it off.
1 bolt is easy and the other looks to be between fuel tank and rear cross member. never really tried that hard.
