Glad you now have a Cammer!

The champagne car is a GP SJ, black Cordova top and black standard interior. Original paint on her still.
This is actually my second OHC, already have a Fbird Sprint ragtop.

For those V8'ers of you who haven't followed up on the progress of this car over on the OHC section here is an update:
Got the car and was a bit disappointed, nothing terrible but the car wasn't quite as described. Main issue is that the dealer wasn't completely honest, I know how unlikely this sounds but I guess not all 100% of used car dealers are perfectly honest! Car had some rust repair history that he obviously saw but avoided photographing and lied about during my phone conversations. Good news is the that while there is some sloppy rust repair done to the bottom rear corner of the front fenders and the rear quarters have had a lot of the wheel lip rebuilt (in metal at least), further inspection revealed that the rest of the car is original and rust free: rockers, doors windshield area, rad support, floors, trunk pan, deck lid, tail panel, hood etc are all good and original with no hit or rust repair history. Paint is a nice 10 footer. I did the subframe and rad support pucks and surprisingly the metal here was also rust free. The interior is surprisingly nice and 100% original save the repop carpet. I'm told long term owner (40 plus years) bought it as a two year old car from the original owner and the car wintered in Orlando Florida every year and the interior makes clear this car was always kept indoors. Perhaps that first year or to it was winter driven and/or the trips to and from Florida happened in salt laced road season. Car ran ok but needed a going over mechanically, bad oil leak at the head gasket and other smaller ones. Pulled the engine, inspected it, changed seals, gave it a valve job. Everything is numbers match except it had a carb with a code for an AC car but I found a correct NOS carb for the non Ac auto trans application. Runs like a gem now. Did the regular brake, steering work and replaced the jobber leaf springs with a correct set of originals I had for that correct low in the back look 69 Birds had. Original auto trans ran ok but we redid the seals. Convertible top looked really nice and fits well but cylinders were leaking so we replaced them along with the hoses to be safe. (changing cylinders on an F body is a much bigger job than on A or B body cars, it was a royal PITA). For the life of me I couldn't find a correct set of the 14x6" black rims it would have come with. The car was built with the wire covers and I had a really nice early take off set I bought 15 years ago so I finally settled on a nice clean set of 1973 LeMans 14x6 rally II's with the exact same offset for a base engine 69 Firebird black steel wheel. I painted them black so they'd look correct with the wheel covers on them. Original collapsible spare is in great shape with all the gear including the original inflator can. I left the interior pretty much intact other than restoring the clock and adding a few options like I usually do. If you've never driven a monojet equipped OHC let's just say it makes you appreciate a GTO engine but at the same time it's not as bad as you may think, even with the two speed. Around town and highway cruising it's just fine and peppy relatively speaking. The 3.23 gear (versus a 2.78 with the basic 2bbl 350) helps. Biggest issue that with a two speed it can't downshift after about 55-60 mph so quick passing and hill climbs are best left to the GTO set. When I look at it all I can think is that the original owner was probably somebodies very well coiffed secretary, wife or daughter! It is a neat example of the bread and butter models that were everywhere then but now have almost all vanished.

For tires I went with the original sized E70 bias belted units from Coker. It is quite noticeable the difference compared to my Sprint which has it's original 14x7" rims (all 69 Firebirds except the 1bbl six used 14x7 rims) and F70 tires.

I truly respect your effort to recreate the period correct drive experience. Applause. From the original brochure literature:
“Our trusty Overhead Cam Six is still standard, too. While it develops 175 horsepower, it runs, not walks, on regular.” Don’t make liars out of the PMD ad team!

Here is my salesman pitch to a potential buyer in 69 who couldn’t afford to swing with the big bore cats,
“son, this is the highest power standard six sold in America and it is so modern it produces an incredible 175 horsepower per carburetor barrel, that is double the horsepower per carburetor barrel of that GTO you were looking at on the other side of the showroom! Imagine how much power this here OHC would make when you put on a nice big Holley!!”

Nice work north!
The engine looks looks it has the 67-69 style upper timing belt cover to my eyes. If you are interested in the correct 69 only timing cover I should have one with the smaller style rear cover, along with the correct 2 bolt cover retainers (hexagon spacers not the bolt on bracket used for the 3 bolt covers) If I still have the parts they are yours for the price of shipping. I only have the 67 Bird left so I don't need the 69 only spare parts any longer. Let me know

Camerjeff, thanks for the kind words and I’ll take you up on your offer. You are correct about the upper cover (and the one behind it), I have the original but the upper cover had a really messy paint reaction problem that I couldn’t remove so I pulled some parts off a spare 68 engine I have.
The 69 set up is not as robust, the bean counters must of got their nose in there! I’m also looking for a 69 breather tube (oil filler to air cleaner). I somehow lost the original this year when the engine was out. If you need anything in return I have two relatively complete 68 1bbl engines I can pick at for you.

One thing I didn't mention about the new car is the interesting induction sound. Like my Sprint the exhaust note it is clearly not V8, however the Sprint induction sound is similar (on a smaller scale) to a 4bbl V8. The 1bbl car induction has almost a turbine or jet type sound. I don't know if this is a monojet thing or if it's the combo of monojet with the better internal flow of the OHC engine. Closest thing I can think of is a 70 455 olds 2bbl a friend owned back in the 80's. Too much engine for the carb CFM.

so with your very nice collection of 69 cars do you plan on a judge and a trans am?

I have one of each, took me a while. Probably because I'm not a big fan of flashy cars like that. Got the TA in 2017 and the Judge in 2019
The Judge is an 11,000 mile original that was drag raced new. Luckily all the original parts were kept so the car was returned to stock by previous owner. When I got it in 2019 it still had a mix of original paint and lots of poorly (typical 70's paintwork) repainted panels. The original owner had chopped off the upper lip of the rear wheel openings so we rebuilt the original lips and replaced the soft metal that had caused at the bottom corners of the quarters behind the wheels. Rest of the car was rust and hit free. To preserve originality I left all the jams and floors etc with their original paint. Interior is 100% factory original down to the carpets (except for the original woodwheel I added, that black coal bin needed a bit of color!) Car was a bit of an oddball, RAIII, M21, 4.33 STT, stereo, 8 track and power windows but manual steering and brakes. Runs very strong, sounds like the 301 RA cam. Amazingly with the 4.33 gears and the racing history (I've got dozens and dozens of slips from 69-71 era) the car is still numbers match from engine to diff. Original owner was a Pennsylvania Dutch pig farmer, I guess he knew just when to shift! Not a car to drive regularly without the assists and the 4.33's but you can feel that low mileage in how tight everything is, down to the headlight switch and door handles. The TA is my only car that had a full resto (I'm looking for the right survivor TA), It's the typical optioned TA with RAIII, M20, gauges, console etc. Came out of South Central Oregon and stayed around that area till it was restored around 2000 by previous owner. Really nice shoot on a super solid west coast car but the repop interior isn't my thing. Numbers match. All I did was tweak the weak spots in the car, (timing chain cover, got the gauges working right, correct springs to replace the too high stance it had when I got it.
