Don't think any survivors. Sad news, wonder if they had passengers aboard or just the crew?

My son does aviation photography, and he knew the pilot of the P63 and also was friends with a couple of the crew members of the Texas Rangers. He said there should only have been crew members on the B17 as they do not usually let other passengers on the plane during an air show. He was pretty upset with this horrible news.

B17 was minding its own business, whereas supposedly the Low Wing P63 has blind spots for situational unawareness.

There are a number of videos of the actual collision from different angles. I honestly can't figure out how the situation could have occurred with planes crossing paths like that at an airshow. I heard the blind spot theory stated which is entirely possible given the left wing down attitude of the P-63 in its turn and the B-17 to the above and right. My gut reaction was that event planners and air controllers failed to provide and maintain adequate separation of the event's flight paths.

An accident that should have never occurred.

As a pilot myself , Idk why that guy came ripping up on that b17 or why they weren’t at staggered altitudes. Usually in formation of any kind there assigned altitudes slightly off. Not second guessing the guy but usually they’d be at similar speeds.
My friend who flys air shows says they run an inside loop for fighter type and an outside loop for the big stuff. I can tell you it can be tough seeing all planes in a regular pattern and many accidents happen on clear beautiful days. Sad day for all involved. Flying. Small planes can be dangerous have many friends who have crashed

Speculation in the local community thinks the P-63 was coming around to join the B-17 in formation for a pass over the grandstand area, missed the center line of his turn, got his wings too vertical, lost control surfaces. Horrific videos, but a blessing more on the ground were not involve. Mike Pearson

I think that is the B17 I got 2 rides in at the Wings Over Houston back in the late 90s.
