I agree with tucking it away - maybe behind the a-pillar pad up to ceiling near sun visor

It would only be there while driving. Not at a show or something. Y where else could it be hidden and still pick up my voice

So I am still laid up weeks later and haven’t gotten much done. My brother and nephew are supposed to take what’s left of the shortblock out of the car Friday and get it to the machine shop. At this point I don’t think anything was seriously damage but I am so afraid we are gonna get it on the stand and the crank or something will be ruined.

Tear down so far doesn’t show any damage to pistons or heads. Will know about crank today or tomorrow.

I have always cleaned up parts with Kerosene. I have to clean out the oil pan and valley pan and oil pump and all the other little pieces that I will be reusing. What have you found to be the best "soak" to clean up and get gunk etc out of used parts. I know obviously I have to rid everything of any shavings from the failure but I want this stuff squeaky clean just like it was new when it goes back in.

The crank doesnt even need to be turned. He is prepping the block and cleaning up the parts and things. Should get all that back around Christmas if I can pay for it by then. When I get it back I am gonna have to buy rings, bearings, gaskets, etc but thats all I need. As previously stated I hope to be back on the road by March so I can go to the car show in Myrtle Beach

Update to the build
I am facing another surgery in the near future and will be pressed for time if I want to take the car to Myrtle Beach for the car show in March. For that reason I am letting Wayne Sless do most of the assembly of the engine except for things like the oil pan and intake manifold. If everything goes to plan I will be recovered by the end of the month and he will be getting done. I hope to be rolling by the first of March. After that I have interior and I am done. I am ditching the bench and buying Pro Car buckets when I do the interior.

Best wishes to you.
Haven't done much reading in this section for a while and had no clue about your engine problem. Real sorry about the setback. You have great commitment to your dream so its going to work out. |

Back from the hospital. I am good for the time being but the car is still sitting and driving me crazy. Machinist says end of February and I will be getting it. He is going to break it in on his run stand. I am gonna cut the filter there and if all is good I will load it up and bring it home to put in. Trying to get ready for the Run To The Sun car show in Myrtle Beach. Provided I get it in at the end of February or firsts of March how many miles should I put on it before I consider it safe for a 500 mile round trip drive?

The 500 mile trip in itself would be a great opportunity to continue the break-in process. I like to drive local hops just to insure that all the bolts and clamps are tight, but once the integrity of the engine has been confirmed a proper drive is great to continue the process. Basically you want to avoid idle conditions and if at a light you simply drop it in neutral and keep the RPM's up a bit. Avoid lugging in overdrive and keep the cruise RPM up in a comfortable range. Coasting down for a few seconds in gear every once in awhile helps also. You just really want to avoid low RPM, lugging, and constant speeds.

One of the best things you can to break in a street engine is drive it up a long hill on a 2 lane country road with lots of turns. Pulling the hill helps seat the rings and varying your speeds helps with the rings seating where you installed them at, ring gaps 180 degrees apart.

You can break it in on the trip if you avoid constant cruising speeds. It needs to be run through the gears on acceleration and down shifted for deceleration as well to seat the rings. Both load and high vacuum situations. Avoid constant engine speed for the first 300 miles or so.
