Default Very cool NASCAR style engine build

Dyno pulls start at 5800 RPM. All kinds of very cool stuff inside the motor and very cool process.

I wonder what that combination would make with a more street friendly camshaft and a pump friendly 10,25 compression.

So many interesting things about that motor. All of it really, but the cam and valvetrain in particular. Those cam lobes look like they'd have more duration than what they stated, was it like 280 @ 050? And the sound of that thing at 8500 RPM is just awesome.

Same here. I wasn't up on the current technology. Pretty impressive mix of new tech with the pressurized piston and valve spring oilers, crankshaft and camshaft lightening and old tech like loose connecting rod side clearances. I especially liked the lash cap/pushrod length solution to valve lash adjustment and was reminded of the old tech cup shaped "bucket shims" used in OHC engines.

I was at Church Street Station just prior to the '85 Daytona 500 and "Dollar Bill Elliott" drove his #9 Thunderbird cup car down the main street to be placed on display. The sound of that motor running at just off-idle an arm's length away was really impressive.

Interesting I thought, the 4 bolt mains are straight, not splayed.

Glad he commented on various footage used because torquing this head was clearly mock assembly, note the missing outers.

Can anyone explain the use of extra oil in head to control valve spring harmonics?

My guess is high viscosity oil film serves as a dampener?

l have yet to get comfortable with minimalist pistons.
Tapping a piston into the bore with just a knuckle? Extremely light ring loading?

The oil bath is used to cool the valve springs.

I just spent last weekend participating with a Trans Am Series team at the F1 CIrcuit of the Americas track in Austin Texas. The Trans Am cars are running unrestricted cup engines - 900 HP and 10,000 rpm capable although they are mandated to stay below 9000. These cars were hitting 181 mph on the backstretch last year. TA2 cars use hi-perf crate engines limited to 495 HP and 6800 rpm and can still muster 160 mph. This was my third year to join in and another fantastic weekend at COTA.

Last year's Trans Am event included and engine & differential replacement. No coolant resulted in toasted rings and a worn pinion bearing wiped out the ring gear. But what's $70,000 when you're having a good time? Also tore down the transmission before the race just to inspect the dogs on the shift arms (5-speed sequential) and discovered a cracked bearing race - avoided wiping out a $40,000 transmission.

The 14.5 to 1 compression ration takes care of that.
