Thanks Tom. Both cars show data plates with AEE on them. I have owned a few first gen birds and have never seen letter codes AEE on the data plates on any of the 67' 68's or 69's that I have owned.

It should be a Norwood made Bird.
AEE is for Decor Group option

Also would be for 1969 Bird because Norwood didn't build them until 1969.

Thanks John, now I wonder what decor group? I had a winward blue 69 400 with deluxe blue interior and a expresso brown 69 350 ac car with factory deluxe black bench seat interior and black vinyl top. I dont believe either one had AEE on the data plate. sorry it's the coffee

Decor group was a separate thing from the custom interior. At the start of the 69 model year the Firebird decor group included: Deluxe steering wheel (softer three spoke instead of the hard plastic two spoke), Deluxe wheelcovers (the six spoke covers replaced the dog dish hub cap), wheel opening moldings and pedal bright trim. As of December 4th 68 the price of the option increased from $57.93 to $62.14 to reflect that the dual horn option was added to the group. On March 17th (when the base equipment on the Firebird was de-contented) roof drip moldings were also added to the group (except convertibles of course) but surprisingly the price of the option group did not change.

BTW, my Norwood built Firebird has the decor group but does not have AEE on the trim tag. It is a June built Sprint convertible. Perhaps the AEE was only used on coupes to call for the drip moldings?

This is kind of unrelated, my car had Deluxe wheel discs and trim-brk- pdl on the phs. But doesn’t show wheel opening moldings or stainless trim on drip edges but has both those things in pictures when it was new. It’s an 03a RAIV did those trim type parts come w the RAIV package ?

Only thing that makes sense to me because I don’t have a code 324 on there.

Early March build would still have the Moldings on the drip rails standard. I see a lot of PHS's with most of the decor group options but not the group itself. Which steering wheel did your car have? Either the car was built with the wheel opening moldings or the dealer or original owner added them as an accessory when new or soon after.

It seems strange in our affluent times but people where much stingier back then, dealers were very careful not to order any option on lot cars that didn't add salability to the car that exceeded the cost of that option.

While drip moldings were deleted from the standard equipment list on most Firebirds on March 17th they were kept standard on all Firebird 400's (including TA's and Ram Air models). This is why the various 400 and Ram air options increased in price on March 17th. Unlike the dual horns, pedal trim plates, deluxe wheel covers and deluxe steering wheel the wheel opening moldings and the drip moldings were not offered as a separate option so if you wanted them you had to order the decor group. Also because of these moldings being now optional (except on 400's) it became necessary to order the decor group in order to get a Cordova (vinyl) top, unless it was a 400 car.

Unlike all the other 69 Pontiacs that basically had two pricing structures (before and after Jan 1 69) the Firebird pricing had five distinct periods with different pricing structures. I think the much poorer than expected sales and then the extended model year into November 69 were the two main contributors.

My car had the three spoke softer wheel.

Wouldn t think they’d have added the wheel lip moldings because it was a dealer owned race car. You’d think something in the wheel well would be the last thing they’d add. Especially since it had a really tall front tire on it.
Pretty much has all the parts of the decor group in that picture I posted that’s why I thought maybe the RAIV package got you that group as well.

In fact I’m this pic you can see the molding was getting into the tire and looks a little bent up.

And looking at the 68 and 70 up cars they didn’t have the wheel well moldings so only the 69 had it. Feel like if they added it they’d have added it on the other two cars too.

Did the option prices go down late 1969?

The base price of the car went up on jan 1st to include the headrests (which were billed separately before jan 1). On March 17th they cut the base price (because they took things like the compact spare, wide oval tires, courtesy & glove box light, drip moldings off the standard equipment. In sept 69 they raised the base price to reflect the percentage price increase on 70 models over 69’s.

Most option prices stayed the same throughout but some of the major groups (Sprint, 350, 400, TA etc) were tweaked during the year up and or down.

I always wondered, you learn something everyday. I have a 69 400 4 speed car, decor group. I actually thought all 69's had the drip rail moldings. Car came with a black vinyl top and custom interior. power steering but no power brakes.

Perhaps AEE refers to drip moldings once they became optional, all three of those cars in the last thread were built after the March date when they became optional and they are all hardtops. This would explain why my convertible (June build, with Decor Group) doesn’t have the AEE.

Do you have a pic of your cowl tag?

There's a few discussions on the AEE (and others) for the Birds.

AEE code

Now the 'B80' code is a whole 'nother thing.

I just made a table of all the photos of 69 bird trim tags I have handy…

Notice that no ragtops have AEE and that the only TA without it is the only one without decor. While the 400 cars all came with drip moldings perhaps the TA didn’t?
