A friend just bought a 1973 SD-455 Formula with Honeycomb wheels and is seeking info on the correct factory lug nuts for this car. Did Pontiac use the acorn style nut that has the "cap" on it? Any help is appreciated as he is seeking original appearing lug nut. Thank you

yes. same lugs as rally 2 wheels.

Having worked with these on customers cars , they suck.
I prefer the Gorilla " buldge " chrome lug nuts. These have a extra wide mating surface which will secure any wheels with any wear in that area. . They look identical from 3 ft away.

agreed. even the cheap ebay repros are better than the old capped GM lugs. the caps get distorted & sometimes wont allow a 3/4" socket to fit.

or more expensive ones. both the repros & originals are correct for rally 2 & honeycomb, they are just an acorn tapered lug.

During the time frame when these cars were daily drivers, I used to keep used the 7/16 nuts from junked cars, and other sources in my tool box for when they rounded off the jacket.

I still remember one time in a snow storm (1975 ish)I had a flat tire on my 73 Grand Am and had to call my father to bring me an 11/16 socket so I could change the tire on my jacketed funnycomb wheels. I was so mad I couldn't see straight.... They all got replaced shortly thereafter.

I know why GM decided to use the jacketed lugnuts was because the earlier chrome nuts were over $2 per lug nut back in the early 70s, you could buy aftermarket nuts for under $2 for 5 nuts. It may have made monetary sense for GM to produce cheaper lugnuts, but it was a royal PITA for people that worked everyday R&R the wheels on GM cars. I was one of those poor souls.

Cheap lugs are still a giant pain in the ass on new cars. Mopar is the one of biggest offenders. 2018 Ram is starting to show signs of the lugs swelling. Good stuff.
