lets confuse things here-- I ran a reverse cooling -- remote pump with lines to the back of each head then out the front at the original water pump inlet holes and the thermostat housing. BOP made some nice fittings to bolt up there to have AN hose thread right on.

The IA2 block we run in Fairmont is reverse cooled. Race only and it was done to cool the heads first since it's a 1000+ hp nitrous application. The block is run dry deck with no water cooling passages into the heads. It uses a remote mounted Meziere 55gpm electric water pump. The water travels out the front of the engine, thru a fixture that eliminates the block mounted water pump, into the front of the heads, out the back of the heads into the block, which has water passage provisions for it in the rear of the block, then thru the block back to the front. The system uses a radiator. The remote elec water pump is located on the lower outlet of the radiator.

If something sort of simple like either option aids in additional cooling i'd like to try it. I have a road where i have to run 3rd gear at 30-35 and thats when my temps climb, especially past 95 degree outdoor temps

also what size adaptor would i need for the rear round port e-heads to say a #8 line would i need? I have plenty of #8 and #10 hose around, i'd just need a few fittings. figured since i planned on flushing the cooling system, this would the perfect time to make this type of change.

i run the electric water pump and 160 stat now with a good 1.25" dual core aluminum radiator and the summer night temps can still be well over 100 degrees outside.

I removed the adapter and put everything back to the way I had it setup last summer. I don't like the idea of not running a thermostat. I routed the back of both heads to the front water crossover, and also went to the timing cover heater return. I also left in place the bypass. And drilled 2- 1/8" holes in the thermostat to remove any air. I used -10 for all my fittings and just used heater hose line for now.

I’d love to see some pictures of the routing, Steve. I plan on reverse cooling once I go twin turbo. If you have any, you can email them. You probably still have my email address.

After quite a few months of waiting and waiting I’ve decided to design and build my own CNC aluminum water manifold adapter/thermostat housing for a Pontiac. The final touches are being put on the design file now.
  • They will have rounded edges
  • I’m going to integrate an O-ring for sealing on one side to eliminate the gasket
  • They will be made to accept a thermostat.
  • I am also working on a way to add a restrictor in place of the thermostat. I have a few ideas but this is a want and not a need so, we will see
  • They will be about 1” thick
  • They will be made for -8 or 10 fittings
  • All parts will be CNC machined from aluminum
  • I have a Pontiac CSR swivel water neck housing I’ll use for test fitting with the adapter. This would make the assembly gasketless as there would be O-rings on each piece

Are you making a spacer that will allow #8 orb fittings?
will those fittings be under the T stat or above it?
just looking to see if i add additional rear cooling from heads to the front, i wanted to see if there is a solution like i saw with a SBC spacer where the t-stat sits on top of the spacer and the #8 ORB fittings are below
this way it helps to control temps from being to cold, at least that is my understanding

Yes it will sit under the thermostat neck like you described. It will look similar to these Mezeire pieces but the fitting holes will be located appropriately for a Pontiac. I will only be supplying the spacer. Fittings will need to be purchased separately. I do like the idea of an O-ringed fitting.

Just an update on my thermostat and coolant setup. We ran the Car at Mission B.C. track this past weekend. Temperatures during the day were hitting 38*C or 100*F. It was very hot. The announcer was saying the track temp was around 140*F. Car ran great. The temperature on the engine never went past 180* The thermostat is at 160* After a run and back at the pit area the engine temp was 170-175*. We cooled it down with the fans and electric water pump. Works very well to cool engine down. Even with the thermostat and two holes drilled in Thermostat, the engine cooled to 140* very easily. Car ran a best of 10.11 at 133 mph. I still having traction issues which I'm going to address. Visited with Dave from S.D. Thanks to Dave for the tips on the Suspension.

No, but if you give me a few weeks I should have some ready to go.

If you need something right away and don't care that both -8 coolant lines are on one side you could possibly redrill the Meziere piece to fit a Pontiac.

Did you ever make any thermostat versions ? I tried to order the ones with the disc but they are 6 weeks out.

Working on it. I have the CNC files to do it. What I don't have is a ton of free time as of late. Possibly in the next 2-3 weeks but no promises

If you are desperate for one ASAP I suggest buying one from Meziere and redrilling it for a Pontiac.

On a race only application: electric pump, electric fan, coolant restrictor with 1" hole. A 3/8 aluminum line from the rear of each head to the thermostat housing above the restrictor. Works like a champ. When I do the E-85 changeover in the spring, expecting to drop radiator size a goodly bit.

Okay I have an update. Funkhouser’s ended up fabricating a low profile water neck for my build. As some of you know I’m in the process of switching to efi and eventually turbos so I wanted a forward facing throttle body. He tried a CSR 360* swivel water neck but it hit my intake pipe/clamp so he whipped this up in Solidworks. This design is very different than a traditional water neck.

Features:
  • 100% billet
  • Threaded water exit for use with -20 AN ORB fitting
  • Threaded for -8 AN or -10 AN inlets to pull water from the rear of the heads (I haven’t decided which size yet…probably-8)
  • Water pulled from back of the heads enters the housing above the thermostat so water is constantly moving in the cooling system
  • Very low profile to clear fuel injection and nitrous components
  • Uses standard style thermostat
  • O-ring base to intake manifold (no gasket required)
  • Countersunk hardware for clean appearance
If anyone is interested in buying one I can probably have a few made. I don’t know pricing yet.

Also, if anyone is interested in remote power steering brackets (clears driver’s side turbo manifold) or Holley smart coil brackets please let me know ASAP.
