Default How Does the Trunk Light Work?

I'm very confused about how the trunk light is supposed to work. I'm re-doing all the wiring using an American Autowire kit, and my car has a trunk light. The kit does not appear to have a provision for that, so I'm trying to add it. The original harness had just a single wire that went to the trunk light. I assume it was a power wire, and the light grounds itself on the trunk lid where the fixture is screwed in.

But how does it know to come on? From what I've read, the light "turns on when you open the trunk"... except I see no switch anywhere that would do that. There's no obvious self-grounding switch like on the doors or the parking brake pedal. And it seems to me like the trunk lid would be grounded ALL THE TIME, not just when it's open.

WHAT BLACK MAGIC IS THIS?
