I am not sure if this is a question or an answer, but here is the saga of getting my temp under control. Hope it helps someone cool down. I started with a mild 400 with the stock cooling system (3 row radiator, 180 thermostat, rigid mounted 4 blade fan, cast impeller iron waterpump). Using the stock gauge, the temp ran at 1/4 of the gauge. It reads from 100 to 250 so that should be around 140 degrees! Replaced the motor with a 4.125 stroke standard bore 455 with hardblock up to the water passages and Milodon water pump with 160 deg Milodon t-stat and 6 blade flex fan. Temp shot up to 3/4 of the gauge and got a little higher at times. Too hot for me. Took out t-stat and replaced with a gutted t-stat as a restrictor..no change. Replaced the flex fan with a HD clutch and 5 blade fan..no change. Got a Rodney Red radiator and put a 180 degree "never fail" t-stat with 4 holes drilled around the base in..no change. I was MAD now. Replaced the t-stat with the gutted t-stat again. Temp went all the way down to the 1/4 mark again..too cool. YAY! Put the 160 deg Milodon t-stat back in and it now runs right at 1/2 the gauge. This is right at 175 and I am pretty sure it is accurate. In my case, I am sure I couldn't get the temps down without the alum radiator but it didn't mean anything without the proper flow. When the Milodon t-stat opens, the whole body of the unit drops down and the water flows around it...not up through small passages through the body so it should have good flow and still regulate temps. Just my 2 centavos.

Thanks for the info.. Why do you think the Miloden/Rodney Red combo worked differently the second time?? The Fan?

The first time with the Milodon t-stat was with the stock cooling system. My surprise during this whole deal was when I put in the Rodney Red radiator with the Motorad 180 t-stat and it STILL overheated. From there I went with the gutted t-stat and it ran too cool until finally settling with the Milodon 160 again.

Be Cool 1000 HP Radiator and the advise from this web site to GUT the thermostat. Now instead of running at about 212- 220 stopped in traffic, Maybe 175 if not less.

67 462ci & chained down to keep it in its place!

I did the similiar work as you did. But I stayed with a 4 core steel radiator. I was was running 210 all the time and 240 in the heat in traffic.
Worried the crap out of me.
I changed the radiator, water pump to a cast pump, replaced the plate, along with new rubber grommets ( i only had one ), new hoses, new flex fan and a new 180 degree stat.
I am now at 180. I'm not sure what it was, but it dropped it 30 degrees while running. It still creeps when sitting though.

We will see in July how all of it works wheb it needs too.

I would also like to bit*h about the rally gauge.
The spread for the numbers is crazy. The center is 210 but the hot to the right is 240. Cool side should be 180, not the lower temp it reads.
Has anybody ever really checked the reliability of those rally gauges ?

Goathead. THe Milodon water pump is model 16281. It is the high flow one. To me, it just looks like an aluminum version of the stock pump with the cast impeller....nothing earth shattering. It also is the long pump which made me change my pulley setup. I have heard that NAPA has basically the same pump as the Milodon for less than 1/2 the price.

I spoke to soon.
I was driving around yesterday and the outside temps were around 60 - 65 degrees. The car was running around 185 degrees, while moving. However I left the car running and was talking to someone for about 10 minutes and the car heated up to 230. Once I started driving the temp came back down. Has to be a airflow problem ?
I take it that the water pump is also turning slower pushing less coolant.
Back to the drawing board.
Well, at least while driving it's at 185. It used to be at 210 all the time.

I don't see a listing for a Milodon T-stat for a Pontiac. Will a Chevy or Ford T-stat work?

JoeF. The part number for the Milodon T-stat is 16400. Summit part number is MIL-16400.

Since you went to the trouble, why did you stay with a 5 blade fan instead of a 7 blade? This should help your low speed cooling.

I have a 474 KRE motor, over 600 hp, 3-row brass rad. and 160 stat. car runs no more than 190 in Detroit dream crusie. It has a duel elec. fans from some unknown front wheel drive car. At the track it runs 160 in lanes, about 175 after burnout and 190 thru the traps, then back to 170 by the time I drive back to pit area. It's a cool thing.

Are you running a slow water flow 6" pulley? The 455 AC 8" moves up to 30% more water. Combine with the 19" heavy duty Hayden clutch fan assembly should alleviate a lot of folks hot idling issues.

Wow, this thread is from 19 years ago. The poster hasn't been on here since 2005....
