Einstein may be correct...if so 3.11x3.23 gives you an effective 10.04 1st gear, should be more than adequate.

Agreed. I have the same gearing and would not want anything higher. If I don’t come to a complete stop, I don’t use first gear.

That is the gear ratios installed in my Stock 67 Firebird Sprint, because it is an A/C car it has 3.23 gears, and the 3.11 1st gear Saginaw. It drives just fine, and I drive it the same way Hokie1984 described, I only use 1st gear to start off with, and if I slow to under 10mph or so.

My 69 Sprint Firebird was a factory 3-speed 3.55. Previous owner, my dad, swapped in a 3.08 Camaro rear, then put in a Muncie 4-speed which was a 2.54 first gear. Was kind of OK to drive on flat land, but a bit weird doing uphill starts. The 3.08 blew (had a rough life in its previous car) so due to tight budget of being a teenager I grabbed the quickest cheapest used rear from a Nova. Turned out to be a 2.73. Was like starting off in second gear even on flat land.
So yeah, choose ratios carefully. PS I'd still like to find a correct ZH 3.55 Nodular case rear end, date code Oct-Nov 68... |

Jeff, what is the item in the last picture, sitting on the red rag?
QUOTE=Jeff Hamlin;6322703]1966 Clutch/Brake mounting bracket will be the same L6 & V8. If you're going to try and just add/replace the pedals be sure they are '66. '67 are designed/bent differently. The only things that may be an issue and should be confirmed before purchase are the Bell Housing, Flywheel, and the Z-Bar/Fork assembly but I'm not 100% sure as I've always had OHC 6 parts to work with. I just know that they are different than the V8 but again I never tried to use V8 parts other than a Clutch assembly. Hopefully, others will chime in.[/QUOTE] |

Oh, OK. It was on it's edge in the one photo. Had me scratching my head.

So I see that I may have a problem here, with some parts being proprietary to the OHC6. This is based upon the diagram that Jeff posted earlier. I'll have to see if I can assemble the parts to complete the job.
As mentioned, I have the trans, clutch, bellhousing, fork, etc. But it's all of those little bits and especially the z-bar will need to be sourced. |

I was wondering where to find the correct bellcrank(Z bar). Maybe a V8 one could be cut and lengthened? I would think the mounting point on the block on the L6 would be further away from the frame. Are there any other differences?

2.84 first gear ratio Saginaw is what you have.

2.84x3.23=9.17 1st gear...that should be OK. If it's not enough you can always find another Saginaw.
