Rewind to 1986. My dad bought a 1964 Tempest. Car is a rust free California car,bench seat 326 4 speed. Very nice driver. In 1988 he gave it to me for graduation from HS. In 1990 I had it repainted. Now come 1998 and wife and house comes around so I sold the car. Recently I found the car in northern Ohio at a classic car dealer. It now has a gasser vibe with the same paint as in 90. I talked to the dealer and price is $31k. Seems pretty high. I’m looking for some opinions on pricing.

Not outrageous if you ask me...of course I'd try to get it down a couple thousand. California rust free car. How much would you spend in paint and body work to get it back where it is? Plus as Tim John said, your Dad bought it for you. Not many people get a second bite at that apple. It's a little high but not crazy high in today's market. Negotiate a deal.

Your probably thinking it is high referencing what you sold it for back then.. Unfortunately you have to look at the time and money it would cost to replicate what your buying now. Is it probably on the high end, yes. When will you have the chance to ever buy it again and how much will it cost then? Assuming you spent the time to find it because you’d really like to own it again, negotiate the best deal you can and go for it….

Looks like a cool car. If it's still in good shape body-wise and mechanically, a $31k list price from a dealership doesn't seem out of the ordinary to me. Keep in mind that dealers are almost always going to list a higher price than what you would expect to see from a private party. To an extent, they have a profit margin built into their list price and somewhat expect you to haggle. If you decide to pursue it, I don't recommend telling them that you are a former owner since I think that could jeopardize your ability to negotiate. They'll know you have an emotional connection to the car and are less likely to walk away from their initial list price as a result.

Yep if solid and decent paint 31K would be a drop in the bucket in time and parts for even a solid slightly rusty one!

Most body shops minimum shop rate is $100/hr.

I'm trying to copy my 64 Impala and I guarantee with a good solid SS I will have that much in paint to change colors!

I think that price is right in line with today’s market. I would buy it and not look back.

A cool car like that ready to go for 30k probably won’t last long. Put a deposit on it and buy a flight.

Absolutely! If I had known my car was my first car when I was buying it I wouldn’t have haggled as hard as I did. I even told him we couldn’t get to a price and said thanks and hung up (!). He called me back a few hours later and we did a deal.

I would say the price is good. You couldn't build it for that. I paid $1200 for my '65 4 speed tripower GTO in 1982. But, I never got around to selling it. Adjusted for inflation, that $1200 in 1982 would be close to $3500 today in 2022 dollars!

A 4sp Tempest first sold at Salta in Long Beach. That in itself is pretty cool.

Seems a bit high now but maybe make an offer.

Also aren't the trunks on '64s supposed to be painted same as body color??

Inside of the trunk was always painted body color in 1964.
