1970 esprit
My new local friend bought a 1970 number matching esprit and I'm trying to help him with engine heating issue. He says around town it runs fine temp around 185 190 then when he goes over 60 mph on freeway it starts climbing till about 240 he exits and it cools again. Can the group help him trouble shoot this. He has a new clutch fan engine rebuilt to 383 was a 350 he said. Im.thinking radiator possibly. He needs help.

Sounds like a clogged radiator.

Agree radiator capacity is generally the issue when overheating at speed. He should also check ignition timing at road speed RPM. Not just initial timing. Timing issues can cause overheating as well.

Check the spacing of the water pump backing plate to the water pump impeller. That gap should be pretty damn tight. It's often overlooked and results in subpar cooling.
Make sure the radiator isnt clogged. New clutches for our fans can be hit or miss. Sometimes you get a dud that doesn't work like it's supposed to. Make sure it's engaging at temp. Double check timing. If the engine was run on an engine dyno, sometimes the timing an engine likes on a dyno isnt what it likes in a vehicle. Double check AFR. If it's lean, that'll heat up an engine at highway speeds pretty good.

I will add, in 1970, and especially in the desert south west, Pontiac Offered and sometimes installed at factory, a plastic air filler cover to be mounted on the top of the core support to the Bumper.
This ensured all the air from out front was forced into the radiator. ALSO.. Run a 160 degree Thermostat. and pressure wash the Condenser too if you take out the radiator.
