Default 68/69 throttle cable and bracket

I've been fighting a slightly high idle for a long while. Can't get it below 900~1000 rpm. I finally figured out the problem isn't the carb but the throttle cable OR the bracket. The cable doesn't fully 'relax'. The reason the bracket looks so beat up is that I spent last half hour straightening it out thinking that was the problem. Now I suspect that someone bent it on purpose because it's even worse now.
Can someone post a pic from this angle, taken by zooming through the hood spring uprights. I don't think it's a factory bracket and I KNOW it's not a '68 bracket. No part number, it's just stamped 'TF' in a large font.

Sorry about the sideways pic. Something lost between my phone and laptop I guess. Basically, I want a sideview of the mounted bracket. Trying to see where it lines up on the intake.

IF that's a big - 2 after the T... then you have a 2bbl throttle bracket.

have never tried running the 4 bbl cable on a 2bbl bracket, have the correct 4bbl brackets.

You're absolutely right....it is T2 not TF. That may be exactly what the problem is. The fact that it has it's own identifier tells me that it's different. I need the cutout for the crimped end of the cable sleeve to move about 1/8th of an inch forward.

I have to mount it this way for it to idle down to the factory spec.
If I pull the flare back inside the notched out area, idle is about a grand in park.

Here's another difference that I forgot to mention. The lower mounting tab that goes to the manifold is suspended off the manifold about an eighth of an inch after I straightened it out. In the photos there is a washer underneath that lower mounting tab...so, I need a 4bbl throttle cable bracket.
Sending you a pm Roger.

Here are a couple of pics of my 68. This bracket has a part number stamp. The bracket is original to the car.

Yeah, I found pics online with the part number and that's what made me think the T2 may not have been factory, until OPH explained what it is. The center pic you posted shows the difference. You see that the cable clamp on yours is roughly in line with the '5' on your intake. If you look at mine it is nearly an inch behind it. That's putting tension on the throttle arm.
Visually, they are the same but mounting the 2bbl bracket to the 4bbl intake doesn't work because the lower mounting tab doesn't reach all the way to the manifold surface and the cable-clamp portion does not reach forward quite enough to allow the throttle to completely close..

Sorry about the upside down pics. I posted one twice and left out the third one. I don’t know how to change them, but here is the one I left out.

Ok, big surprise for me. The factory throttle bracket is pretty much the same physically as the T2 and obviously, has the same problem. In fact, when seeing it next to the bracket that was on my car I can see something that I had already suspected. On the T2, the rectangular hole that captures the 'lip' on the cable end has been enlarged to allow the cable to come forward, just not quite far enough....which is how all of this started. High idle.
So, mystery #1 can be seen in the photo. Why does the bracket not extend down to the bolt hole on the intake where it attaches to cylinder head?
It's like the boss on the intake is too tall.
With the bracket off, that boss measures exactly 1-1/8" from the top of the casting to the inside 90 degree below it.

Now that I have an original, I can see how extensively someone modified things to 'make it work'. I can't believe that I'm just noticing this. Even the clamp has been routed out to allow the cable to move more forward.

I was just looking at the bolt sets in the Ames catalog to see if it was one of those bolts with a stud on top. No photos although I did note that the '69 bolts were a different part number.
Ok, I can work around that until I find the correct bolt. Ames' catalog threw me, listing the same bracket for '68/'69.
Now, I'm back to my original problem of the throttle cable being under just enough tension to keep the throttle cracked open.
Any ideas anyone? I'm going to pull the cable out just to lay eyes on it and get some measurements.

studded bolt is the same for the pass front ac bracket 68 69 70 up
or
the 70 up drivers front alt bracket 2 front bolts on intake ,,, fairly common
I can mail you one if you dont have one
I also should have a real 68 under the bolt head 4 bbl bracket or a 69 70 on top bracket
also no need to pull the cable .... just measure between the collars .... 4 bbl is 1/2" ?? longer ,,,
also a part number silk screened on them too
I have 4 bbl cables also if needed

The longer of the two cables l have is the one on the car and it's too short. Part numbers are long gone.
The bracket that I just bought is a 9792068. Does the actual '68 part have a longer downleg? This one is 1-3/4". It needs to be at least 2 inches.
I'm really trying to make sure that I don't buy anything else and then find out that I don't need it or that it's the wrong part or that it's the same part that I already have. I just blew good money on this bracket that I now don't need. Sorry for the rant but it is frustrating.... frustrated with myself that is.
I'm trying to load pictures but that function seems to be down.

9792068 is '68-69 2bbl
9799069 is '68-69 4bbl A-body

'70-71 A-body bracket (except 71 RA 455HO) is stamped, A G P if memory serves right.

'68-69 the lower leg lays flush against the intake manifold flange.
'70-71 bracket, the lower leg sets up aprox a 1/4" & the lower leg sets on top of studded intake bolt.
'70-71 4bbl can be used on '68-69's but is cosmetically incorrect, must use studded intake bolt.

Have them all, as well as nice original cables.
No more '71 455 HO-RA cable brackets. always amused by requests for those... Pontiac just built a ton of 'em, LOL!

Well, that gives me the dumbass of the year award. I basically bought another 2bbl bracket!
What makes it really bad is that these two 2bb brackets are practically worthless to anyone I would imagine. I just don't feel like throwing any more money at it at the moment..

If I buy the correct bracket, I would love to know if that will fix my cable problem. You've already explained that it will extend downward to place it under the bolt head but does the cable mount portion extend forward any further than the 2bbl part?

Not sure if this helps, but because of this thread I checked my bracket ... it says "T 4" on it in big letters.

Default Bracket

Here’s leg length

long on top

You can use a 67
But
Originals don’t have coil bracket hole
I see u have hei.

I’m sure I have a 67 at the other garage in the 66-67 swap meet tub

I Thought I had a couple extra 68-9 4 barrel brackets Minus coils and brackets but I just have sets 67 is the same shape and looks the same just no hole for the coil bracket bolt under the head style the later ones are a little better with a stud I can mail you a bolt w stud if you need one
