Finally reunited the original gold painted (55P UPC code) 15x8 Snowflakes with the 'Boy" TA. They were on the 'Girl' TA for the last 20 years, or so, we're guessing. They still have the factory darker gold paint still in nice condition. Here's the Build Sheet that lists them as well as the Dealer Copy invoice as a 'No Charge' option. The BFG TA's need to be replaced as they were manufactured in 2000!

Just curious.....if your 78 has the braided ground strap that goes from the back of pass. side head to firewall... just above blower housing?

BTW radials in this century mostly now have an extra nylon ply (cap). In the 70's they didn't.

Dan had the original numbers matching block machined to .040" over and had the decks trued and squared. Forged Eagle H-beam rods and Icon flat top pistons replaced the stock cast pieces. Since he had a few Summit 2800 cam & lifter kits around, one of those was installed with poly-locks. The 6X-4 heads were cut enough to clean them up and ensure good sealing and has new Ferrero valves and springs. The pistons are .005" out-of-the-hole, so Felpro .045" gaskets were used to get .040" quench. The static compression calculates at 8.75 to 1, so 0.65 above stock. Since the TA already has an exhaust system designed for factory SD455 exhaust manifolds, Dan elected to use '70 D-port RA manifolds in-lieu of the original logs. The engine gets broken-in next week and hopefully to the dyno before the end of the year. Dan's hoping for 350 hp and 450 lbft torque, so we'll soon see.

Way back in 2012 Dan dyno'd a stock rebuild to a '79 TA W72 400 with the factory manifolds & Y-pipe; late 60's logs w/true duals; and RA manifolds w/ true duals. This W72 400 had a custom ground cam with (@ .050") 202*/219*/110* with .420"/.450" lift installed at 106*. The static compression ratio was a true 8.1 to 1. It made 305.6 hp @ 5000 rpm/402.0 lbft @ 3200 rpm through the Y-pipe single outlet; 328.8 hp @ 4900 rpm/412.0 lbft @ 3400 rpm with early log manifolds; and 335.3 hp @ 4800 rpm/420.2 lbft @ 3700 rpm with RA manifolds. The best power for all configurations was 42* total. He even made pulls with the shaker scoop on as well (lost 12 hp at peak/ 9 hp avg.).
The more I think about it, I believe 350 hp is reasonable to expect with the 2800 cam (204*/214*/112* @ .050" & .420"/.442" lift) and 0.65 point higher compression, but maybe torque will be closer to 430 - 440 lbft range. Dennis |

The W72 dyno'd back in 2012 was just a re-ring and new bearing job with the factory cast pistons and rods!
After he reassembled and broke-in the engine it was dyno's in 6 variations: 1) With the original ’79 exhaust manifolds through the factory Y-pipe, no ac base 2) With the original ’79 exhaust manifolds through the factory Y-pipe with ac base 3) With ‘71/72 A/F-body exhaust manifolds with dual Pypes 2.5” mandrel headpipes with ac base 4) With factory A/F-body Ram Air manifolds with dual Pypes 2.5” mandrel headpipes with ac base 5) Same as 4 with TA air cleaner no scoop 6) Same as 4 with TA air cleaner with scoop (not opened up) Power results on a stingy dyno (2800 to 5000 rpm): 1) 397.3 tq @ 3400 / 300.0 hp @ 4900 2) 402.0 tq @ 3400 / 305.6 hp @ 5000 3) 413.0 tq @ 3400 / 328.8 hp @ 4900 4) 420.2 tq @ 3700 / 335.3 hp @ 4800 5) 417.6 tq @ 3400 / 331.8 hp @ 4800 6) 412.2 tq @ 3400 / 322.8 hp @ 4700 Dennis |

The dyno session is scheduled for next Tuesday, Dec. 14th. The W72 has been test run and the cam/lifters broken in, so ready to make meaningful pulls. Hoping for 340 hp/ 430 lbft torque.

How about 371 HP and 460 lbft Torque!
Dan had a good dyno session today with the W72 400. This is the original numbers matching engine that was removed way back in the late 1980's to make way for an SD455 build with a Doug Nash 4+1 5-speed trans. The original owner of the car rebuilt the W72 engine around 1980 with an H-O Racing TurboForce system and went to .030" over TRW's on SD455 forged rods. When the Mike bought the car in the mid 1980's he immediately went to work pulling the turbo'd 400 and building the SD455 engine.
Long story short, Dan rebuilt the original numbers matching engine with .040" over Icon forged pistons w/4.5 cc valve reliefs that are .005" out of the hole and with .045" x 4.328" Felpro head gaskets to provide .040" quench depth. The 6X-4 heads were minimally cut for trueness and measured 92.45 cc's average for an final static compression ration of 8.75 to 1. Dan replaced the cast rods with forged Eagle H-beam rods. New 1-pc valves (2.11/1.66) with CC dual springs were installed. A Summit 2800 cam with new 'old' Crane hydraulic lifters along with a new Melling 60 psi oil pump were installed. The one modification was the use of old factory D-port ram air exhaust manifolds with the 2.1" outlets with Pypes 2.5" mandrel headpipes. The original 17058263 Q-jet on the factory cast iron intake with the EGR system and plumbing were reinstalled. The base runs were made with 42 degrees total timing in by 3000 rpm, 45 primary rods/74 jets/CH secondary rods on an I hanger. The 3rd (and best) base pull made a corrected 360.3 hp @ 5000 rpm/456.1 lbft torque @ 3600 rpm (351.2 hp/444.5 lbft uncorrected). The correction factor was a low 1.026 as the weather conditions were very good...low humidity, high barometer, and very cool temperatures (65 in dyno cell). After rejetting the carb to 40 primary metering rods/72 jets/DA secondary rods on an 'I' hanger (same total timing at 42 degrees), employing the 'big' dyno room dumps for the headpipes, and installing the air cleaner base, the max hp jumped to 371.4 hp @ 5000 rpm/459.2 lbft @ 3600 rpm (362.0 hp/447.6 lbft uncorrected) on the final pull (#14). The highest torque reading was on pull #13 at 460.3 lbft. This engine surprised us by exceeding our initial 350 hp/450 lbft prediction. It should move that heavy '78 TA with some authority. The rebuilt original W72 400 and BW-ST10 4-speed are now back in the TA. It was 1988 when they were pulled out for the hot-rod drive train. Though, not 100% stock...D-port RA exhaust manifolds, H-O Racing chrome roll-bar and sub-frame connectors (bolt-on) are the only deviations.

Amazing Dennis, how minor exhaust manifold/outlet changes produce much greater HP and Torque on a small cam, low compression 400.
