Radio fader, rear speaker wiring
Can anyone draw me a schematic of the circuit for the AM radio fader switch and rear speaker? I've got all the "drawings" from the manuals but I can't find any actual circuit diagram. The AM radio/harness I have came from a single speaker car, so the plug it uses doesn't have a contact for the third prong in the radio that appears to be used on two speaker systems.
Anyway, rather than buy $100 worth of wiring harnesses I figured if I had an actual schematic I could just wire it up myself. Initially I figured it was just a "speaker out" wire to the fader and the fader split the output between the front and rear, but there appears to be something else going on there. Thanks. |

Do you have a two lead front speaker (+ and -) or just the single green positive?

The harness is a single green lead to speaker. The speaker is a two terminal 10 ohm replacement speaker with + and - which I was planning on running to a local ground. Rear speaker will be another modern replacement speaker with two terminals. By "Harness" I mean the plug that goes into the radio has the yellow power lead in one slot, and a green speaker lead out of another.

I'm too lazy to draw a diagram and five pictures say a lot.
THIS IS FOR THE AM RADIO ONLY Speaker wire with yellow power wire attached Connected to switch harness Theres a small opening above the radio receptacle for the harness clip. Complete Harness. Note the blue rear speaker wire plugged into the switch harness

Is that an actual fader or an on/off type switch? My 68 originally came with an AM/FM with the rear speaker reverb switch.
A complete wiring harness, switch and clapped out speaker came on on ebay about 5 years ago for $200 & I hesitated. I wish I would have bought that when I had the chance. Now I just have the AM/FM with the single dash speaker. So its half correct anyway I never realized there realized there was another mono option for a rear speaker. thats pretty cool.

OG, thanks a ton for crawling under there and taking those pics. That's exactly what I needed to see. Makes more sense now.
And, PM sent for the offer, thanks much again. |

Its a true fader.
There are actually two different versions of this switch. Apparently there are front speakers with a pos and ground lead to the plug and speakers with a single pos lead and grounded to the speaker housing. The two switches are wired differently for each type of speaker.

When you guys are installed adhesive sound deadening or insulation on the floor are you running your wires below the insulation or above? I'm kind of hesitant to put it beneath butyl rubber stuff like Noico. Should I put the wires above everything except the carpet?
I'd hate to every have to pull up that big flat cable to the back if it was stuck down with Noico. |

factory ran it directly on the floor before the tar paper was installed but you can run it easier just under the carpet if you keep it away from foot traffic. Best route is along the far right side of the floor in the nook where the floor turns up to the rocker panel (just below the belt retractor. Tape it in place so it doesn't end up against the seat leg brackets.

Stay away from 4 ohm speakers (almost every speaker built since the 70's is 4 ohm) as they will fry your radio over time. The radio is designed for 10 ohms, but you can get away with 8 ohms but no less.

I got a couple of the modern reproductions that are 10 ohm. Tested on the bench, so far so good.

The fader option migrated in those years… up to 68 it resided on the top of the dash, in 69 it slipped over the tuning shaft on the radio and in 71 or so it moved into the radio.
The reverb and even the 8 track all used the “intercept” concept of wiring in that they insert themselves between the power source and radio itself.

Mine is all under, but I used the factory style floor insulation, so not really a fair answer to your question. I re-coned an original speaker. I forget where I bought the parts, but I might have the info somewhere. Was pretty easy & kind of fun to do actually.

Maybe I will cover the top of the flat cable with wax paper or something, then if I need to get to it at some point I can slice along side it and peel the Noico away easily.
