Anything of value?
I’m cleaning out my shed while I can still pick up the heavy stuff. 😁
Anyway, my friend had a 336 GMC he was always going to do something with & didn’t. He took it apart & had it tanked. Then he let it set for 10 or so years. I don’t know what to do with this stuff if he doesn’t want it & I don’t think he will. Heads, intake all the tin, bellhousing, etc. Any guidance would be welcome. Thanks Murf |

PM sent.
That block uses the 347-370 crank but has a small bore for some reason. My only guess is lower road taxes for small displacement?? Will fit any '55-'59 Pontiac

From my web site (link).
"The GMC/Pontiac V-8. (by Bill Hanlon) From 1955 through 1959 small (less than 2 ton) GMC trucks with gasoline V8s were equipped with Pontiac V8s. In 55, 56 and 57 they were almost identical (bigger dishes in pistons for even lower compression ratios and Bendix/Stromberg carbs) to same year Pontiacs. In 58 they used the same block as Pontiac, but only bored it to 3.875" giving a 336.1 cubic inch engine instead of Pontiac's 370. In 59 they again used the same block as Pontiac, but only bored it to 3.78" giving 336.9 cubic inches instead of Pontiac's 389. Cranks, heads, rods, were the same as same year Pontiacs -- except the smaller bore GMC engines in 58/59 required different balancing, hence different cranks." |

I'd think the bellhousing would be desirable for guys with pre-1960 cars who want to change from automatic to stick.

Only if it's an early 336. The later ones will have a 389 crank & block.

Yes, I believe it is the later engine. The crank casting number says it’s a 389. I think.
I posted the stuff in “Other Pontiac Parts for Sale” I hope someone can use it. I hate to send it to the recyclers. Thanks Murf |

So the bellhousing, clutch and starter would work 55-59 Pontiac cars?
Thanks Mu |

If the bebellhousing is the same as the 56-57, it won't accept later more modern transmissions.

1958-60 bell housing on left, it accepts later transmissions. 1956-57 bell housing on right.

Thanks for the pic! Definitely more like the one on the left. It doesn’t have any opening at the top, though.
Is that because it’s a truck bellhousing? I tried looking up the casting number but came up empty. Thanks Murf |

The opening on top is normally covered with a vented plate like the 56-57 housing has. Don't know if there is a difference between truck an Pontiac.

It's a heavier piece than the Pontiac housing. I had one from a '57 GMC and the starter bolts up to the bellhousing upside down from the Pontiacs. Motor mounts are kinda similar but different.

send me a pic. I have 5 pre-'61 Pontiac motors, so I need more than one ! 1-347, 2-370's, 1-'58 GMC, 1-'60-389 pulled life from the jaws of death, saved from the mouth of the crusher...literally... Last edited by GTO-relic; 11-27-2021 at 07:36 PM. |
