Default Where do your tail pipes exit?

So, I am building the exhaust, My old system exited the car at the rear quarter right behind the tires. My new system is too large to make the turns between the leaf springs (3.5") I will probably have them exiting out the back under the bumper with slight turn downs, not pointing straight out. Or should I just point them straight out the back? Anyone have pics of how you did yours? Pic is of my old system. Its hard to see the tailpipes since they are painted black.

On my 71 I ran them dumped before the axle for a few years. I switched systems and ended up doing what you're thinking about doing, and now they exit right at the bottom of the quarters facing the ground.

These are the only pics that really show the exhaust.

If they have a steep angle pointing straight down they will blow up a lot of dust if you are in a dirt parking lot.

Do you need the 3.5 inch tails?

While mine are 69s I have had a couple that exit in front of the axle one 4 inch Would turn out towards the rockers 45 degrees (got lots of fumes in the car)
3 inch ended in front of axle straight back, lots of fumes in the car.
Full 3 inch exhaust goes back over axle then 2.5 to 1/4s I get fumes

Only my 69 w pipes straight out the back and kinda long on either side of my license plate frame didn’t get any fumes in the car

Hope that helps . Nothing I hate more than fumes in the car when I’m driving it my turbo car is very drivable but will make your eyes water after 25 min of driving . Gonna go straight out the back at some point but my coil overs are right where I want to run it.

This is true. The way they were aimed with the 3" did kick up some dust in some areas.

No, I have built the tailpipes from mandrel bends. I have them about 75% complete. Have both built over the axle and just need to finish running them out the rear. I really would like them to exit at the quarter behind the tire but the 3.5" won't fit between the leaf spring and quarter where it would travel. So its going out the back, maybe with a 45* turn down, maybe straight out with a angle cut at the end

I ran mine exactly the same way because people complained in my 64 convertible when they sat in the back seat and the car was running
but parked at the drive-in. They loved the Camshaft noise, hated the fumes.

In the middle with v-bands right behind the axle so removal of everything is pretty simple and gasketless. Trunk mounted cell.

I've had the dump tubes in front of the rear axle and I think it contributed to nose inside the car. Same mufflers and tailpipes added ('68 Firebird) and the car was a lot quieter inside. My '69 GTO has stock exhaust tailpipes and I like the look of the tip of the pipe poking out under the corner of the bumper. Quiet too.

if you go to the rear lower 1/4 n like 72"projects ....be sure to also ANGLE them OUT a little bit. IIRC your looking for about 45* verticle and 20* outside. This will help minimize the BOOM BOOM BOOM ..UNDER the car, Also takes out just a midgen of the flowmaster drone..

Looking at one of these 2 styles. Obviously neither car is mine I will probably build each style, and see which I like best.

I have 2 cars with each style of exit. The straight out back sounds best, keeps my car cleaner, and keeps others happier at events on gravel or grass. Just depends on your circumstance and desires. Good Luck

I prefer to have the tailpipes appear as the factory intended, so it's a little different for each car. They may be larger than factory but still mimic the original shape and exit style on that particular car.

As an example, on dad's car he kept the original resonators from the car when he bought it new, so I took the Torque Tech 3" tail pipes and trimmed them to mimic the same shape.

Exit behind the rear tires, pointed down slightly. Can hear the exhaust bouncing off the car next to you.

I’m going through this right now.
I’m fitting the new exhaust system. It’s a lot more work than I thought it was going to be.

I like the exhaust to tuck up under the car instead of hanging down. I’m positioning the tail pipes to exit in front of the rear valance and turn down.

Sure doesn’t leave much room. I’m trying to make sure I can get at least a finger between the exhaust pipes and the frame/ floor etc.
