Default 1970 - 75 Ram Air Air Cleaner Identification

Can anyone tell me how to tell if this is an OEM or reproduction Air cleaner and about how much it is worth?

Why would you think it's not a OEM one?

Thanks for the offer, but I am just pondering selling it right now. I'll probably kick myself later if I do, so I would have to get a higher price. I'm not looking to gouge anyone, I'm just not using it right now and need to pay down some debt from Christmas. I'm on Ebay under the user name fusion!!! if any feedback on my trustworthiness is needed.

Brew, it would have been nice to own and would have been great to document the differences between the years. This one has a couple of minor issues and if you were purchasing just for placing on a car, he might get the number he needs. But, a restoration of it would cost some and the return isn't worth it profit-wise.

pex006, my offer (I feel) was an honest one based on my location (pay/cost of living). Shipping and the little battle scars (use) is what probably killed this deal.

Mike, your offer wasn't the one I was replying to. It was the $100 offer. Your offer was a solid and good offer, but I just have to decide if I can let it go. If I decide to sell it, I would make the deal your offered. I just have to think it over a bit.

Default AIR CLEANER

this one appears to have the studs for the mounting bracket..its a shame we could not get an original & repop side by side comparison...this does look like a better than average and restoreable original..considering a top o the line repop is $650 can anyone quote a price for a used original like this one...I would like to know is the repop the same gauge steel & weight as an O.E.M.?..if so, fine tuning a repop may yield a brand new/close enough very important under the hood item without paying for a high cost used/restorable unit..I believe a member has a high end repop on order and we are awaiting pix...does anyone have a repop of the T/A functional shaker air cleaner with 2 therm-acs and how does it compare to an original...if its that close to an original than for $299 its a deal I feel!

I'd be more than happy to take more pictures to document of any parts of it for any comparisons you would like if it will be helpful to you. I don't know what gauge steel it is, but I could try to get a measurement. Feels like the usual body sheet metal.

@ pex006;

if you haven't picked up on it yet there is one key thing that you showed which helps ID this air cleaner...

Here is how I step, by step try to identify one:
  1. -All 1970 (non-California) Formula & Trans AM air cleaner bases were stamped WITHOUT a fuel bowl vent;
    -1970 California & 71-74 aircleaners all had the fuel bowl vent.
    This is the first and quickest thing to help you identify if it's a specific 1970 unit.
  2. -All of the '70 Formula specific RA air cleaner bases had small locating studs that worked with corresponding air cleaner brackets;
    -From what I've understood some '71 air cleaner bases also had the location studs - as this was 'deleted' early in the 1971 model year.
  3. -in the case of the RA air cleaners there are two versions of both the fuel bowl vented, and non-fuel bowl vented air cleaners - there are single and dual heat riser air cleaners. This means that there are actually FOUR different air cleaners:
    a) '70 RAIII non-CA: no fuel bowl vent / single heat riser vent
    b) '70 RAIII-CA & '73/74: fuel bowl vent / single heat riser vent
    c) '70 RAIV non-CA: no fuel bowl vent / dual heat riser venting
    d) '70 RAIV-CA & '71/72 455HO: fuel bowl vent / dual heat riser venting

One part which can confuse things is the lid;
All 1970 GTO's & Firebird Formulas had chrome air cleaner lids;
All 1971 & later air cleaners came with black lids.
IIRC the chrome 'engine dress up kit' was sold over the counter to dress up any pos-1970 Pontaic 400/455.

And if this isn't all confusing enough, there apparently were service replacement ones which had a slightly altered base which could better accomidate a holley carburetor (none of the SR units had the locating studs).

So basically, that single picture you showed which has the air cleaner location stud identifies it as a "1970" (also early 1971) unit;
The lid would also indicate it as being a 1970 part;
The studs would make me believe that this is in fact an original part - as I am unaware of replacement locating studs being available - and I have never observed the option to order a repop air cleaner with these studs.

Without seeing the whole underside, I would put it as a "b" air cleaner;
I say this because although the location studs are generally accepted as 1970 specific, that base also has a fuel bowl vent.

It's too bad that it has been cut open - that's a real bummer.

I would be interested in seeing the whole underside to help clarify if it's a 'b' or 'd' air cleaner.

jonny, have you ever seen a '70 assy. w/o the vent hole? I believe they all had them and were plugged when not needed.

The studs were on all '70's, '71's and most all '72 ram air cleaners. The studs were just not used on '72's since the brackets they attached to were deleted for that model year

I could be mistaken but I am pretty sure I had one in my hands several years ago;
another PY'ers asked me to go check out a local pretty original '70 L74/4spd car - I'd have to dig through my 35mm photos to double check.

So I stand corrected;
It had a plug installed.
