Finally got some progress. The crank has been set in the block to confirm clearance.Note to self, cheaper in the long run to use a aftermarket forged crank as the block needs no clearance work and pretty sure the crank won’t need any clearance work also. With the factory crank we had to grind in the block at a couple spots and then had to have the crank counter wrights 40 thou to clear the pistons.Tom

Looks good Tom! So, what's next on this build?
What engine is in the Fire Bird now?

428 std deck RA V engine in the bird.He just has to finish up the short block then finish the rest of the engine. We have everything except for pushrods. The head gaskets will be the next real challenge.Tom

What forged cranks are available that fit the 301t block?

I think I used a Ohio 400 crank,BUT you need to weld up the thrust or use a bearing spacer as the 301 thrust is more narrow than a 400.As I said I believe you are farther ahead using a forged crank.
That is the intake I hope to run on the engine when it gets put in the 69 bird!Note on that mock up it has spacers as its sitting on a std deck block but was designed for a short deck block.Tom |

301 build
Very nice! I love seeing your different builds. Do you have any thoughts on the HP capability that the 301 Turbo blocks can handle?

Had one hicup, had to take the short block apart, chamfer for both valves, reduce the valve size a touch and reduce to 1.50 rockers from 1.65.Because the heads have seat inserts for both valves it has them spaced a little farther apart. That one is on me.I think its back together now and waiting for me to take the 1.50s down to him.Tom

There is a reason I like to look at a engine when being built.Yesterday found a broken guide plate and water by pass plug put in from the wrong side.Tom
