1970 GTO thoughts?
Hi all,
Just curious if anyone knows this car or sees anything out of place. The VIN doesn't look like a correct stamp to me but I'm not an expert on Texas stamping. Thanks! https://bringatrailer.com/listing/19...o-ram-air-iii/

Glove box door fitment is janky and mufflers are same length, but other than that this was superbly done.
The color combo is quite nice. |

FYI, mufflers for 1970-72 GTO are the same lenght from factory.

It looks like it has a dash cover on it by the way it fits around the glove box and dash bezel.

Nice car! That car has a nice list of options.
Are you looking for inaccuracies as a buyer? I see it has a reclining seat on the passengers side. Are the seat releases different for the seats? The release button on the standard seats is in the center of the back, this one has the release on the side. Is this correct? I think it has the wrong wood grain on the dash and front console, I thought 70 looked more like the wood grain on the shifter bezel? It looks to me like it has a dash cap on it. |

Also has a stainless steel gas tank which is of course not correct.
Somewhat concerned about the VIN stamp. Don't they usually run vertically?

Most run vertical. But it is a Fremont car, they seem to be 'different'.
The partial vin though should start with '20Z' not '70Z'? Plus the 'Z' looks really big. Doesn't appear to be ground, so might be a non-stamped block?

Looks like the dash appliqué from a 71. The wood grain on the shifter bezel is correct. Weird they would use the appliqué from a 71. They are much scarcer than a 70.

Not that I care but its the little things like not many people ever seem to get the fender decals in the right place and almost always use the wrong trunk decals and also get it in the wrong place. Also the factory used black decals against the mint turquoise paint which to me looks better than white.
But it looks like a nice car from here, well optioned and probably worth the 40k. I doubt the owner was trying to be completely concourse correct which is fine by me.

Did only the Judge have the fake engine turned lower dash in 70. Remember an attempt at a repop in the last century that had too many swirls. Were many fake woodgrains in the '60s and '70s. Have a roll or two in the back garage but not sure what for.

All 70-72 GTO’s got the engine turned aluminum lower dash. Dash bezel wood grain looks correct, dash looks capped. Probably why the glove box door looks messed up. Added trunk release and rear lamp monitor. Fiber optic grommets look different than what I have seen from Baltimore built cars.

I'm not sure the seats are correct. I thought that '70 seats had the seat back release button in the middle of the seat back. This one looks more like a '68 or '69?

That's really interesting. I was unaware that reclining seats were even an option. Thanks for sharing. That said, however, the vehicle in question also has the side button on the driver's seat too. Was there ever a reclining driver's seat option?

$80k for a regular GTO. Crazy money. Seems like these cars were selling for $20k just a few years back.

When you ordered the reclining passenger seat option in 69 and up it resulted in both seats using the 68 spec side mounted seatback release buttons. Interestingly the hard shell seatback covers are actually not the same as the 68 seatbacks. They use the lower flange design like the 69-72 seatbacks rather than the 68 flange. This makes them specific to 69-72 recliner only, however they both interchange functionally and look the same unless you flop the seatback forward.
I wonder why the seat back button was moved in 69 anyway, I find the 68 button easier to see and use but I guess the 69+ rear center button for the passenger seat is reachable by the driver, chivalry wasn't dead yet!

I do not think so. I am trying to remember where I have seen them different length (for resonance issues?).
Part numbers are different LH, RH yet no hanger brackets to make them handed, unless GM made the drain holes handed (doubtful). So IIRC one unit was a bit longer. |
