There also were box service replacement carbs that were from overruns during production - so these boxed service replacement carbs had pick codes.

"mid-to-late 70's production dates - without a leading zero. " Interesting. Reason for the leading zero was up through the 1974 model year. Rochester (and QJs made by Carter) part numbers had seven digits starting with "70". For the 1975 model year they went to eight digits starting with a "170" so 1975 began "1705". Consequently the older models produced after 1974 added a leading zero because the stamping process was automated (never say never).
AFAIR GM started the specific numbering by division in 1959 and changed a few times. Ever see a Hollerith card ? |

Yes
and even what i will call "Hollerith Tape/Ribbon" "ticker-tape" ?? In the early 70's my Mother worked for a lawyer. They had an elaborate typewriter system (only one i ever saw) I suppose it pre-dated xerox (but they had that too) Anyhow, whenever she typed anything it also coded with punch holes to a roll of paper/ribbon (about 2" wide range). When he wanted duplicates - she ran the tape back through the machine and the typewriter would type it out again automatically. Was fun to watch it happen It gave copies the "real look" of personalized hand typed. Versus the phony look of early xerox - and no "wet paper" to wait for drying. |

its DUCK season !
i don't remember how many [square-rectangular] holes it could punch in one line, 7 or 8 sounds about like the right range. For a 2nd grader - it was fascinating to watch Especially when it indexed for a new paragraph. was kinda spooky |

Heck I remember when tape went from paper (66 .wpm) to mylar (100 wpm). BTW this is teletype (TTY) stuff and didn't use 80 column Hollerith cards. (See FORTRAN and shoeboxes and magic markers).

Last post about Rabbit/Duck season
Any decent GTO Enthusiast has seen Hollerith stuff 65 GTO PHS's use them (80 column - numbered 1-80 along bottom) Can usually decode the punch holes whenever one is a poor photocopy. |

Do you have the 'decoder ring' for reading the punches?

John ! Of course i do !
Send me 5 boxtops from Capn Crunch cereal and allow 90-120 days for delivery. Must be postmarked by Jan 1, 1970 okay (honestly) any ring will work - you just need the clearest copy of a 65 BHC you can find to decipher what all the tiny boxes have printed on them. You are dissecting the bottom row of data boxes with the punch holes. So you can't distinguish option content from the punches 0 is highest punch (through the option code boxes), 9 is lowest punch. A-Z is self explanatory for alpha (the BHC i posted happens to have a Z and an A next to each other for Build Plant and Sales Class - as a good study example) Alpha's use a lot tighter spacing than numerics and will be tougher to gauge using free-hand, in some instances. I know you will get the hang of it quickly Just remember you are dissecting the Bottom Row You can use some Top Row data as a cheat sheet to proof your results. |

OK, class, if we can get back on topic:
The TCS vacuum solenoid has 3 nipples. Which one comes from the carb vacuum tree and which one goes to the distributor? Is one left open to atmosphere? |

I tore down and rebuilt the 07040263 carb today with new gaskets, float etc with a deluxe rebuild kit from Quadrajet Power LLC. As usual, I had no idea what I was doing, but I watched their video twice, which makes me more or less an expert. Right.
As the "Ultimate Warrior" , Unruhjohnny pointed out, the weighted choke mechanism was incorrect, so I took one off an old rusty carb, bead blasted it and fake cad plated it with Eastwood's 3 part paint system. It came out OK and will look decent under the hood. Does it look like real plating? Uh, no. |

I also scavenged the bolts that hold the carb pieces together to replace the incorrect "torx" bolts. Then, the whole 07040263 was disassembled and the body soaked in carb cleaner

Once totally cleaned, I removed the bowl vent and rotated it 180 degrees, then put all the pieces of the puzzle back together along with the correct choke pull-off.
Does it now look right for a 1970, MT Ram Air Federal carb? You can be honest, I can take it. Everything seems to operate smoothly. DISCLAIMER: No good GTO carbs were harmed in the restoration of this carburetor. |

I had these 3 pieces left over in the kit. They don't seem to match anything on the carb. Anyone know where they go?
