Default 1971 Wiper Motor Issue

I was out for a Sunday drive and encountered a few rain drops and of course my wipers did not come on. Went back to the garage with some grease and once I gave a little encouragement the wipers came on. I notice that the nut holding the wipers to the motor was loose and attempted to tighten up at it would not start moving without a little push. So now the wipers work low and high but will not turn off when the switch is moved to the off position. I unplugged the wiper motor and tried again with the same outcome. Any clues about what I might have done to make the wipers motor stay on at all times?
