Opinions on reproduction in dash tach
My GTO didn't come with a tach ... was thinking about a reproduction in dash tach like offered by our hosts. I will be using a point ignition. I don't need to have a Rally dash PCB do I?
Any opinions on these tachs? |

Don't know what PCB is but I have one of these tachs in my car and it works great. My only complaint is that it's dull at night but that might be unrelated.

Yes, there are two different PCBs for either rally or standard gauges. Was wondering if the reproduction tachs required a rally type PCB or a standard.
Now that I think about it ... I don't think the PCB would extend over to the clock/tach slot anyway. |

AFAIK the two different tachs were for transistor/electronic vs points ignition and date back to 1963 (Delcotronic). For a points ignition a simple passive circuit was enough but for an electronic ignition a transistor front end was added to the same circuit.

I’ve used the aftermarket (PY) tach with both points distributor (w/ Pertronics) and HEI distributor and it works fine. The PCB IIRC is not part of the dash tach or clock. It’s a stand-alone and not part of the Speedo and gauge cluster

Confirmed, the clock and tach are stand alone units. The printed circuit board is for the speedo and oil/fuel/temp cluster.

my opinion: they're trash as far as aesthetic quality. functionally it worked. visually, it's horrible. maybe they've gotten better since I bought mine around 09. it had a black ABS case instead of metal so you can't use a factory light harness on it since the housing doesn't ground. at night it was black and you couldn't see crap, the lights did nothing for it. it was so dim I initially thought the lights weren't working. super noticeably different than the instrument cluster's brightness. it didn't fit very well in the pod hole so you could see edges all the way around it after you spent an hour trying to center it. it also had slopped silicone exposed where they glued the face into the housing.
I hated it from the day I had it until I finally just put a hood tach on the car and put a factory clock into the dash. this goes into the category of: better than nothing if you really want it and have nothing else but another flaming beacon of "repop sucks" in my book. other opinions may vary! |

The one I'm looking at has a metal housing, backlit like the original, and mounts like the original ... I'm guessing it's a different product. Picture of it looks pretty good.

My previous comments were based on a tach that had a metal cup..

Did have to mod the light circuit to convert a factory hood tach to run with an HEI. Think I used a Vega circuit board (little round white ceramic one with plated on resistors. Changed the one cap to switch from 4 to 8 cyl then wired the hot lead for the transistor to the lights and changed grey dash light lead to hot in run. Calibrated with a pencil and eraser. Worked pretty good.

You can't upgrade the OEM bulb to a brighter LED?

Probably, just a bayonet base. Last time I modded one was before LEDs.

I had my hood tach serviced by another party this summer. Excellent work and the bulb were upgraded to LED and are bright/white and easily read, using the original sockets.
