Default Speedo cable

I'm seeing numerous different cables listed for a 68 gto with auto trans, no cruise. Different lengths etc. Appears GM still sells one, or at least there is some GM stock still out there.

Any advice on which cable/length I should get for a 68 GTO w/auto trans?

Also .. I plan on checking the speedo by hooking up the cable to my lathe chuck, bring the rpm up to 1000 (I have a very accurate rpm indicator on the lathe), and see if the speedo is showing 60mph ... I think that is the standard calibration setting in the US .. 1000 rpm at the cable = 60 mph on the dial.

If you have the speedometer out and it has never been serviced do yourself a favor now and send it to Peter Serio. Highly recommend that to everyone.

Should be in the assembly manual. IIRC the cable lengths are given for each application even though the part numbers would be different in 68.

Ended up just ordering the "GM" version offered by Ames, the part numbers listed in the Assembly manual don't appear to be any good ... at least none of them show up in the Ames part number lookup.

Unusual that it's not listed on the AC Delco website either. I'm guessing it's a later model part that works on the 68s.

Found the old speedo cable and figured I'd test the speedo.

Photo below is the result, target was the standard 60 mph at 1000 cable rpm.

You can see the lathe speed controller on the right.

I'll hold off on final adjustment until I get the new cable.

If you ever use this method bear in mind you'll need to put your lathe in reverse.

Yep, that's the one I ordered.

OPH .. yep I really lucked out on this parts car. 30 years ago when the GTO was still in many pieces and untouched for years I went to visit my wife at work. Came out of the office and across the street was a 68 Lemans, same interior color, same options, same almost everything ... Note on it said For Sale, $700. It had 56,000 miles ... had it at my house the next day. Stripped and labeled everything within a couple of months and had the carcass towed away (should have kept that). It's saved me thousands since then.
