Carpet Installation
Posting here because ... well, you know, you guys are much more friendly and helpful than other Pontiac owners Shhhh.
I need a measurement from the lower rear corner of the drivers side door jamb to the proper location for the rear edge of the front carpet. (68 GTO) I'm not sure how far forward it should go .. right now you can see the bare factory edge under the dash ... assume it's not supposed to be that way. Any hints on installing this carpet? Does it need to be split or trimmed at the front of the trans tunnel to move forward enough? Is there some kind of treatment or trim that goes on the front edge? At least something to hold it to the firewall? Any advice would be helpful. Thanks 68-69 guys |

Rear seam should be lined with the Fisher Body tag on the sill plates. Front of the carpet should tuck up under the firewall pad. Move carpet up if necessary to achieve this.
rear carpet goes in first This is a great write-up for the seat tracks. https://www.chevelles.com/threads/ho...tracks.236734/

My car never had a factory carpet, so I cannot say how the originals fit, but like you I researched as much as I could. I ultimately ended up buying a 2nd carpet because the first one had a factory flaw in it & then I did the seat track cutouts in correctly. It worked out nice the second time. I didn't cut my carpet as much as GM did, did it the same way so the feet & fasteners are hidden, & just kept my cuts to a minimum & tightened the fasteners from under the sides of the carpet, rather than folding it over at a slice in it. I have pics of that somewhere too.

Here is a picture of the original carpet in my autotrans with console 1969 GTO.
The orientation (the site software rotates it) is you are looking from the door opening at the passenger side so the sill is at the bottom, hump is on to p of the pic and dash to the right. As you can see the cuts are exactly like those indicated in this thread. The only difference is that the factory cut out the material between the front to back cuts on the front half of the rug. I suspect this was done for two reasons: one to not have the seat structure catch the rug flap under the seat but two is that I think they took the pieces they removed and bonded them to the outer part of the front rug to reduce material wastage. (If you look at the under side of the outer edge of the front carpet you can see the bonding tape that adds the extra few inches of carpet to the door sill area). When you build millions of cars a year reducing the length of carpet roll used per car by a few inches it can really add up.

So that is rear seam of the front piece of carpet I see going vertical in the photo? So the front set of seat bolts is cut out of the front piece of carpet and the rear seat bolts are cut out in the rear piece of carpet?
I used some double sided tape to hole the thermozite to the top of the Noico under the rear seat .. think it's ok to use some to go from carpet to the Noico once I'm sure of carpet position ... or does the carpet stay in place pretty good just held by the rear seat, sill plates and console? The vertical line is the trimmed edge of the front carpet. (Front carpet is the right side of the photo)
The factory underpad was cut differently than the carpet itself, there is no underpad in the area under the seat, presumably to keep it thinner to avoid snagging the seat structure when it’s moved back and forth.
