Default 68 Internal Voltage Regulator Conversion Confusion

I have a 68 Tempest. I am researching eliminating the external regulator in the harness. I know there are jumper plugs for the VR pigtail. Also people have replicated it with jumper wires, The issue is there are two patterns that have been done. Either (F to 4 / 2 to 3) or (F to 3 / 2 to 4). I don't know what is in the fancy plug. The second issue that my colors don't match my 68 Pontiac service manual.
My harness is Blue(F), - BLK/Wh(2) - BLK/Red(3) - Brn(4)

while the wiring diagram pg 12-7 shows:
BLK/W(F) - Blue(2) - BLK/Red(3) - Brn(4)

The olds thread post # 10 shows what parts you need to buy to eliminate the VR ,and adapt to the integral alternator. I believe you can arrive at the same goal no matter which wires you jump.

Myself I use a side marker light bulb #194 bulb on number one terminal and just leave the old wires disconnected going to the external VR. You need a resistance on one side of the plug to show the VR a difference in voltage, and activate it to charge when you turn the ignition switch on.

Here's a you tube video to tell you how to simplify wiring a 10SI:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVUL0S704AE

You already have the wires to the alternator from the existing old harness so it saves you running new wiring. This is about as simple as it gets nullifying worrying about jumping the old plug to the VR. The light inline going to the number one terminal is necessary to turn on the alternator. Number 2 wire can jump right to the large charging lug on the back of the alternator.

Hopefully this will simplify it for you.

The only thing you need to know is the brown wire from the regulator plug #4 goes to the alternator #1 and your red black wire #3 goes to the alternator #2 terminal. It doesn't matter if the brown wire is connected to the blue or the blk white as long as it connects to the #1 terminal on the alternator. Same with the other wire going to #2 terminal. This is what you need to know if you are not going to be buying the ready made connectors.

I'm just trying to understand why the wiring connections are so flexible

The only thing flexible is what color the insulation is on the "adapt" wires.

What goes where has to be right.

Your brown gen/alt light wire, on your external regulator, will go to terminal #1 on a SI alternator.

The BAT wire, on your external regulator, will go to terminal #2 on a SI alternator.

You can splice on any color wire you want to get them there.

That help make sense of it?

Looking at a SI alternator from behind with the regulator plug-in on top...

#1 is on the left and #2 is on the right.

Or you could forego wiring anything, and use a single wire, self exciting, alternator.

All you have to hook up is the 10 gauge hot wire and you're done. Wrap up your plug in electrical wire and all the original wiring is intact in case you ever want to return it to a stock type charging system.

You can also get the single wire alternators in different charging amperages in case you have a need for more than the basic 63 amp alternator.

I added a pic of the 'new' converted routing on the SI alternator.
See if it's better?

Yes thank you

that makes your connections clear. What threw me on your page was the colored wire splices diagram next to the photo of the jumper plug with red wires, Do you see how the "rounting" of wires conflict?
With respect to the Olds page on Line 2, I still can't reconcile why their are two wire patterns to accomplish this, Is there a risk of picking the wrong one?

Just make sure the brown wire in regulator plug (#4) goes to 1 R on the 10 or 12 SI alternator. The red wire in the regulator plug #3 goes to 10 or 12 SI alternator 2F
