I recently purchased a '59 Cat with a '65 389 in it. The water pump pulley is most likely a '59 as it almost scrubs the bolts. I am wondering about the front cover and balancer as the cover has a cast in "dowel" w/ a triangle pointer for timing and a two piece balancer assy with the pulleys sandwiched in between. Is this a '65 front cover or earlier as I thought they were alike from '65 - '68(9). I tried to put a later style balancer on to utilize 4 bolt pulleys, but ran into interfearance with the "dowel". The balancer/pulley that is on it is a 6 bolt. If this is a '65 cover will a '68 interchange?

What I am wanting to do is have a two groove water pump pulley, and three groove crank pulley so I can have alt, p/s, and a/c arrangement with correct fore/aft spacing as on my '68 350 using '68 brackets.

Thank You for any help.

Dan,
A 69-up front cover will bolt on and allow the use of the late style pulleys and balancer.

Dan, the part number for a 65 cover is 9773571 and the part number for the water pump pulley is 544595. I have used a 65 cover on a 67 engine and it did not rub but the timing marks are different.

The crank dampner needs to be the same style as the front cover. The 64-67 covers are the same for the most part and they used the two piece style dampners. You either have to use the two piece set up or go with a new style fron cover and dampner.
