power supply calculator
Often overlooked is the rating of the power supply. Some people say just get the biggest one you can afford, others say buy only as much as you need. Here is a nifty tool to help make sure you select a power supply that can support all the parts you are using.

Nice link on the PSU calculator Bast.
My system requires 489 watts, and when I bought my PSU I took a wild guess and bought a 650 watt modular unit. Worked out ok.

Agree on the power supply comment,I always use "quality" power supplies in all my builds, aka;PC power and cooling, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-022-_-Product
Or Corsair http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139005 It is really the most overlooked component on a pc.

The power supply on my old Gateway recently gave up the ghost, I bought a new one through Newegg. Its a corsair 850 modular. Ive been wanting to build a whole new system so I went overboard with the PS. Now im looking for a good graphics card that will be used for gaming.

Best series out their bang for buck.
I still like Nvidia series over AMD, better driver support.IMO This; http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130628 Or a little less; http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130652

Unless you go a lot of gaming, can you really save money by building one vs buying one already built?

Yes, when you build a non-proprietary computer, usually the individual components are better quality and lower price.
In the long run the real savings are when you upgrade the components. With a non-proprietary machine, any time you want to upgrade a component you can.

I've built 3 desktop computers and will never buy another one.... unless I have to get a laptop. I sure would love to be able to build one of those and have a screaming high end laptop.
