Interesting GTO for auction here
Very few American Pontiacs were imported here as brand new cars. Most Pontiacs were Canadian sourced and assembled here from CKD components.
This GTO was apparently brought here and by law, had to be fully converted to Right Hand Drive before it could be registered. The converting company named in this ad, Chapel Engineering, converted a lot of American cars Cadillac, Buick, Oldsmobile and Pontiac. They did a magnificent job creating "mirror image" conversions to very complex dashes. Sadly most of those cars are not on the road now but its good to see this GTO is still with us. https://auctions.shannons.com.au/auc...hd/?lot=68&sf=[{ "key":1,"value":"Melbourne"}]&so=0&st=&sto=0&au=11&ef=&et=&ic=False&sd=0&pp=48& pn=2&g=1

Utterly Amazing how they performed some of those RHD conversions.
Done especially well on this 67. Those individual guys deserve awards for their work . |

Just think what the reaction would be if you bought this car and brought it back to the US. It would sure make people scratch their head.

The amount of under hood work required is amazing!! Probably another 10ft of brake line added and the custom heater box etc, just nuts!!

I can't even begin to imagine how much all that work and fabricating would have cost back then.
Would really be neat if they had kept the paperwork for the cost to get the car there and the conversion cost. The dash bezel blows my mind. Just noticed it has power windows , so they had to revamp that to the other door. Left side remote mirror , so had to source another to modify for the right side. Didn't notice the front side marker lights on the fenders the first time either. |

I've seen photos of full size Pontiacs that were sent to Australia; they built a perfect mirror image dash for 1961 cars, and then used the same dash for several years after that.

To use a famous quote "INCONCEIVABLE!"
Jeez, I wouldn't know where to begin doing a job like that.

There's at least one surviving in New Zealand. A buddy of mine in Dunedin owned this one about 30 years ago (this is a more recent picture of it; it didn't have that paint job when he owned it lol). It was converted to RHD in Australia in 1967. I was told someone imported a number of 67 GTOs and converted them all at once.

A PY member in Australia has a 73 TA that was brought over there in early'ish 80's.
Seems like they were trying to do a home-brew RHD conversion and never finished it . iirc It never got legally plated /driven. Sat for about 25-30 years in a building over there. He bought it maybe 10 years ago , and is allowed to put it back to LHD now. |

Huge amount of work to get those results. Any idea how many vehicles we are talking about here total for say that model? A few dozen, a few hundred? All that work for a couple dozen cars is really impressive. (if that's the case)

Auction says it's an original 389 and that it has 325 HP and tripower was available. All incorrect. Looks like much has been restored, so 'unrestored original' doesn't wash. But, nice car for sure.

Back in the mid eighties, I recall seeing a right hand drive red 67 GTO at a show in SoCal. It may have been at a regional GTOAA meet in Torrence or POCI in Lake Havasu.
IIRC the owner had brought it back from Australia. Somewhere I have some pictures of it. Or maybe it was a dream I had when I slept at the Holiday Inn.

RHD is a different world !
At 19 or 20 I was working in a body shop and one of our gigs was we repaired all the USPS vehicles as needed. Mostly RHD mail route Jeeps. Their hub was only a couple miles from our shop. But a lot of twists and turns. We had to deliver them back to them when finished. Some wild rides I wouldn't want to be responsible for driving anything nice that was RHD. |

Used to be a RHD Impala here. Rumor was that it missed the boat so it got left behind. All I know is I'm behind a guy that kept slowly inching his way forward just to hang a right hand turn. I'm thinking he's completely besotted. Hang on, why isn't he paying attention to the traffic? That's when I finally spotted the hand over hand motion over on the "passenger" side. Got to be out in traffic before you can really see if anything is coming.

So nobody else has noticed the front mudflaps yet? They're... different.
