Question 2000 S10 auto shifter linkage

Picked up an S10 cheap for my daughter. Column shifter has trouble going into park. Tried adjusting the cable but it buckles when trying to go into park. It looks like the prior owner replaced the shift position sensing unit. I suspect the cable is bad but it appears new. Thoughts?

That cable is messed up. The tube part in the rubber boot should be securely attached to, or part of, the cable housing. Then the cable should have a smaller sleeve that slides in and out of that tube.

That exposed cable will just buckle up
