Default 65 GTO Oil Capacity?

Does a 65 with a stock oil pan take 5.5 or 6.0 quarts of oil with a filter change? Also, someone put a dipstick in the tube that says 6 qts on the dipstick...the tube is short and just sticks out of the block by about a few inches instead of extended like originals I have seen connected to the valve cover screw...just bought a Tri Power dipstick and extension tube on ebay...gonna try getting it to fit into the block...got my fingers crossed that it is a fit and the dipstick is the correct length...

5 qt pan, 6 quarts with a filter change. 1967 was the only year with a 6qt oil pan...7 with filter change

not true if you are talking all true pontiac V8 engines. 1960-64s took 4 quarts plus one except 421s , later years around 78 also took 4 quarts plus one.

Not necessarily true as 64 GTOs used 5 plus one. I bought my GTO over 40 years ago and I have changed the oil many many times. 67 GTO as was mentioned had a 6 plus one pan.

I cannot speak for big cars but every V8 tempest, I have ever worked on, had at least a 5 quart oil pan.

Pontiac Service News Flash number 64-16 (10-18-63) and 65-53 (12-22-64) verified that the oil capacity on all Pontiac V-8 should be five quarts - six quarts with filter change. Some 1964 models were manufactured with a four quart dipstick; the five-quart dipstick , part number 9776085 (code MF), should be installed.

Pontiac Service News Flash number 66-5, dated 10-15-65, reported that the 1966 owner´s guide and shop manuals were incorrect regarding oil capacity. The correct capacity was six quarts - seven with oil filter change.

Also 389´s used a longer oil filter, at the time, with approximately 50 percent more oil in it than oil filters on 1967 and later engines.

Thanks again for all the input...when my '65 389 was rebuilt for some reason (guess someone lost the stock dipstick) they stuck an oddball 6 qt dip stick that just stuck out of the side of the block...finally today installed the correct NOS dip stick with extension tube in the block with mounting strut on the valve cover...now just about everything under my hood looks stock...put in 5.5 qts (slightly shorter filter than original)...back to my hidden CD/Stereo project...

By the way, don't ever question what Tom Vaught says. He is Always Right, thank goodness. His advice has gotten me out of a few jams and steered me away from possible disasters many times.
