Default re torqueing the head bolts

OK so if before removing the head to replace the gasket that may be leaking exhaust into the water should i first loosen the head bolts and then retighten them or just check the torque?
thanks

I would torque them in the correct sequence. If you loosen them first you won’t know if they were torqued correctly by the engine builder.

Once the fire ring of the head gasket as been comprised by combustion gases passing thru it i would amazed if retorqring the bolts made a difference, and if by some chance it did then I completely don't think it would last!

X2.

I don't think retorqueing the bolts is going to fix it. Spend the time pulling it apart.

Check the torque for sanity. I’d be more concerned that the leak developed due to the head or block no longer being flat.

Have you done a radiator compression test to verify you actually have a leak?
