I would rather have the car bone stock. A car all lettered up is "someones" race car. I'm not interested in owning or driving "someone elses" car.

That’s a valid point, I can respect your opinion on that.

For me I grew up next the dealership and knew the driver. It was owned by the dealership just like every other Pontiac ever sold so I don’t think of it that way. More like it was used in advertising.
Allow me to play devils advocate on that theory though,
if you bought your cars used they were someone’s else’s cars before anyway and if they were new The dealer owned them previously,.

But if it makes you feel better that’s what’s important.
Everyone has to do what makes them happy.

Great pictures Jeff!

I`m in for "as raced".

I think bone stock Pontiacs are worse than fat broads in yoga pants.

It depends on the car and the history for me. Some should be returned to stock original and others kept or restored to as raced.

I’d go back to stock with the first RAII Firebird..

If I was at a car show, and there was a concours restoration sitting next to a race car, same color, model, and year, I'm going to look at the race car first.

I worked on the cars when they were new, and drove other peoples cars, so I know what the stock car is all about. I want to see what modifications were made over factory to further enhance the performance.

If the modified car happens to been raced on a course, other than a drag strip, (oval track, road course) I'm not even going to hesitate to go first to the modified car first.

At last years Norwalk event there was an as raced, 65 GTO oval track car sitting under a tent on the edge of the show field. I poured over that car looking at all the details under and all around it. I would never crawl on the ground to look at the bottom of a 65 GTO restoration, since I've seen the bottom of dozens of 65 GTO cars when they were fairly new, (I owned 3 of them) just from working on them, and owning them. I want to see the modifications they made to make it corner. What they used for a rear axle, front suspension modifications, etc. I already knew what it looked like before it was raced.

Just my take on it, YMMV.....

Does anyone here know Bob Rhoades in a photo in post #3? I have never seen anyone who spells their name the same as me and most of my family comes from the Wisconsin, Iowa, and South Dakota regions. If you know him and he's still around I'd like to speak to him. Sorry for the thread steal.

My vote is to keep them "as raced" because that's where the story is. I appreciate a nice restoration but there's plenty of them around.

Interesting car show story: the place where I work used to have an employee car show. Over the years, I took the Grocery Getter and the Boss Bird. I got the most attention BY FAR, the year I took the Boss Bird right after the fire. Body was junk, shedding burned fiberglass, engine was trashed, windows melted...nothing done to "fix it" except putting on tires that would hold air. It had a story......

We had a mold made at VFN to make new bodies. We didn't use any actual vintage Boss Bird parts.
