17x9s got here today. 17x8s are still on backorder. I like these way more than I thought I would! I may paint the inserts a little darker to add some more contrast between the spokes, but they are sharp wheels. Pretty heavy though.

Curious what size I might be able to get on the back without rubbing on the exhaust. I'll get a rim mounted up later and take some measurements. 255 would be safe, but I'm wondering if I could get away with a 275.

Since you are putting these on the same year car I wanted to give you my tire sizes for reference. You may like them bigger, smaller, whatever your liking is.

The car is a 68 LeMans vert with about 68k on the factory suspension. As far as I know the coils have not been replaced.

Initially I put 275’s on all the way around but the bottom of the front fenders chewed up the tires. I ended up going with 235’s in the front and have no issues.

These are Hurst Dazzler wheels I can’t remember if they are 8” or 9”

Tires are Diamondback redlines based off of a Nitto 555

The pic with the beer can visible is the front tire that is a 235/45 17

The rear tire pic (without beer can) is a 275/40 17.

Hope this helps!

275/40-17 is too low profile for your green GTO.

255/50 is best.....

Everyone has a preference- that’s why I posted the pics- so the OP can decide what they want. I agree they are kind of small from the side. It also depends on ride height. I have 275/40 17’s all the way around on my 70 and love it.

Thanks for posting 1965gp, it's really helpful to see.

I put the rims on and rough cut some cardboard to estimate the tire height and width (I was generous with the size), and I'm leaning towards 255/50. Theres a risk 275s with a sidewall height I like will rub against the exhaust. I'm also sensing I'll probably want lowering springs when I get this thing together

To answer my own question about the lug nuts, you can't use stockers with them because they don't seat in the wheels..

However, Year One offers OE-looking replacements with red, black or gold centers.

If you want a pic of the 275’s near the exhaust let me know. I haven’t had any issues but I think this car probably has 2 1/4 exhaust which is small by today’s standards.

Anything else I can help with please let me know.

How are the tires holding up? It looks like there’s kind of a texture on the sidewall under the redline.

I’d probably want more of a sidewall than a 275/40, but I’d love to hear how much clearance you have with the exhaust. I’m running a 2.5” Pypes system so I’d have a little less room than you.

Tires are holding up great- I think that is part of their ‘red lining’ process. I should be able to get you a pic tomorrow of the exhaust

Interesting. Given what they charge I was hoping there would be no trace of their process. I'm still having a hard time swallowing an additional ~$125/tire for redlines when I could get blackwall NT555s at America's Tire for $175/ea.

Nitto says the 255 will be 10.43" wide (fully inflated) and the 275 will be 10.94" wide so .25" to the inside and .25" to the outside. So width wise, there really isn't much difference.

The big difference is the diameter. 27.1" for the 255 vs 25.7" for the 275. The 275 will leave an extra .7" gap between the top of the tire and the fender opening. Will that be acceptable to you or will you be looking to lower the car?

Your photo shows that you have about .75" clearance with your existing rims/tires.

If you do some math by looking at current rim width and BS and current tire size, it should be pretty easy to see how much clearance you would have to your exhaust.

I don't know off the top of my head what the BS is on your 14x6 Rally II's. But suppose that they have 4.25" BS - then your new 17x9's would need to have 5.75" BS to put the rim in the same position (3" wider - 1.5" inside and outside will match).

The section width of your 225/70's is 9" according the BFG.

Just plug in your real numbers and see what you come up with...

Wish I still had my larger pics available, but you get the picture.

17x9 all around, 255 in front, 275 in the rear. Used to rub the exhaust ever so slightly, but went back to the stock exhaust and have tons of clearance now.

Ken, you will be close with 275s to that exhaust......since I know it's not a stock exhaust set up. Maybe we could meet up and I could lend you a wheel for fitment to see if they will clear or not. Let me know.

Tried out GasTiresandOil's 17x9s the over the weekend. 275/45s fit no problem on th rear, but I ended up playing it safe since the offset of our wheels is different and it looks like I could use a little more sidewall to fill the wheel well. I ordered 255/50/17s for the rear and 245/45/17s for the front. I ponied up for the Diamondbacks and asked them to put the redline closer to the rim if possible.

I found Discount Tire has a super handy tool to compare tire heights. https://www.americastire.com/learn/tire-size-calculator

Comparison on the new lugs vs. the stock repros.

Those 245/45/17's at 25.68" are going to be pretty short in front, you may end up lowering the front to close up the gap to the fender lip. Did they make those tires in a 245/50? Good choice on the rear size though

I had the same thought, but 245/50 isn't available in those tires.

245/45 looks pretty good to me in a black wall based on pics in this thread. I hope there's enough sidewall for the redline to look at home. I'll cross the lowering bridge when I get there.

Ken

Do they have a 235/50/17? That would get you to 26.25" tall. Either that or a 215/55/17 which would be 26.3". I'm presently running 215/55/17's front and 245/50/17 rear.

My other options for the G2s at Diamondback are 225/50 (25.9"), 235/45 (25.3''), or a 255/45 (26").

The 245/45s are 25.6" so it's in the middle of all of those but it's about an inch shorter than what I have now.

From the idle hands do devil's work department...

While I wait for my tires, I figured I'd try some different charcoal colors to get more contrast on the wheels. I grabbed a VHT Charcoal Grey (lightest), a Duplicolor color called Magnetic (middle), and Eastwood Charcoal (darkest) .

It's crazy how shifty these colors are. In the shade they look really different and a lot darker, in the sun, they seem to all be about the same. I'm leaning towards Duplicolor Magentic, but might keep hunting.

On another note, it looks like the VHT color looks reasonably close to the original Rally II grey. I have the Eastwood charcoal on my 14x6 wheels now. I didn't realize how dark it was compared the original color.
