Quite the contrary. The 1977 W72 was available with either the 4 speed manual or the M38 TH350 auto specfically calibrated with higher shift points and higher stall converter. This was also the case for part of model year 1978. Also not mentioned is the L78 400 with 180HP which was mated to a M38 TH350 only.

As I posted earlier, “some may be fact, some maybe not”. The writers of these articles are an example that one cannot rely on what they summarize is factual. But still interesting compilations?

And, the “Hitman’s Pontiac Trans Am forum”does a pretty good job of breaking down production numbers and options for Trans Am’s.

Be sure to check out a website called Atlanta Time Machine, there’s a Smokey and the Bandit movie section with lots of photos from the movie and modern day comparisons of exactly where the scenes were filmed. Pretty fascinating!

Yes. I may be wrong, but I believe it was only the 1979 models that only had a 4 speed behind the T/A 6.6. These we're stock piled 400s from 1978

The 301 also had a 4 speed optional. No W72 400's in 1979 paired with an automatic.

That’s what I’ve read, and that the 400’s were stockpiled from 1977.........

Some of the burnout/smoking tire launches sounded like neutral drops to me. When we were younger and the car didnt have quite enough power we would put it in neutral ,hit the gas and drop it in drive.

The original sound effects were definitely not from a 1977 Trans Am. This scene used a 4 speed Trans Am grabbing rubber in second..

I thought the Trans Am sounded a lot like the 2 lane blacktop 55 Chevy in some of the scenes.

There seems to be two sets of sound effects used in this movie. The one posted from You Tube most definitely is not a stock 1976 or 1977 Trans Am sound. They didn't have rear gearing available that would have it revving like that in those years for one thing. Plus it goes back and forth from sounding like a 4 speed to an automatic. There is the other version, with different sound effects, that aren't as dramatic, but sound more realistic.

Those are the "enhanced" sound effects that were implemented 12 years ago on the DVD and TV releases. The new sound effects sound like crap-reminds me of a clapped out dump truck.. The songs sound terrible too in relation to the original sound track.

I agree. I prefer the original soundtrack and sound effects.

45TH anniversary of the theatrical release is coming up in 9 days. Some select theatres are showing the movie(with the newer sound effects) around Memorial Day weekend.

Watched a great program on the REELZ channel on Burt's life.

"Autopsy: The last Hours of Burt Reynolds. "
Investigating the cause of death of actor Burt Reynolds.

Never knew he was taking so many pain killers. Was shocked how frail he looked when I watched the Gas Monkey Bandit Episode. But he did live to his early 80's.
