Hi. Does anyone know the thickness of the Butyl tape used to install the front windshield and rear window on a 1965 GTO? I know it may differ slightly from car to car but there must be an average size that was used. Bodyshop set glass to low using black window sealer and now there's a gap between the glass and molding. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Body shop should have used spacers to set the glass.

I would pick up a set of spacers and have the body shop fix their mistake.

The 5/16" square size will work with factory glass. Thinner aftermarket glass will need a thicker 3/8" square size. Prime both the pinch weld and glass surfaces with pinchweld primer [black rubber], once glass is set put a thin bead of urethane between the edge of glass & butyl , smooth with popsicle stick that will seal it up. The only spacers required are two rectangular spacers to support the glass from sagging down , they can be made from any rubber or plastic . Flat spacers will not be necessary since the butyl tape will provide the support and height.

Due to the age of our vehicles and the unknown quality of the imported glass, I think it's important to dry fit the glass first and cut the spacers to the thickness required. You want the glass molding to lie flush with the glass and the body. The link below shows how to do that.

My 64 is nowhere close to installing glass, but I'm all ears. Is all aftermarket glass thinner or only certain sources? Is there as standard thickness or dependent on year?
