Can a 71-72 rear bumper be used on a 73-74 car? I think they have a cleaner look.

I have seen it done - there is modifications that you need to do since the 73 - 74's have a different bracket, or shock. I have also seen racers take off the black rubber between the front bumper and nose and get the bumper in tight to the nose for a cleaner look.

Guys:

My understanding is that this can be done, by swapping the '73-'74 bumper brackets to '68-'72 bumper brackets.

I sunk the stock bumpers on my 74 right back. I eliminated the shocks, and built custom brackets for the front. Dropped about 150lbs off the car as well by cutting out most of the reinforcing behind the chrome. Have you ever lifted one of those baby's by yourself? OK, I realize that if anyone ever hits me, I will wish I had my "5mph" bumpers back, but hey, no different than a 72' right? besides, the thing looks like an old checker cab with those bumpers sticking way out there like some kinda doorstep. I can email a couple of pics if you want to see how it looks.

Here they is. I gotta post them one at a time. Please excuse the pics, I took them in the rain and the car is quite dirty. This is after all my daily driver.
note: front plate attached to the bottom of the rad support.
69 side markers,69 trunk badge. you can't see them, but I also used 69 grill and fender badges. I hated those cheap looking stickers. I built this one after I restored my 68. Yes. It is an original GTO. I just built it the way the factory should have. It also has a 400 in it. Soon to have a 700R4 overdrive tranny. Oh jeez, I just know this will draw some hate posts from the purists. )

Paul6874,Those bumpers look great and the car does too.Is there any way you can write down exactly what you did to the front and rear? I would appreciate it. It would clean up the look and I could do it before I start any bodywork later. Thanks Cliff

I should have a bunch of pics here somewhere. I did the work back in about 99' long before I had a digital. I will dig them out and let you know. One thing I would do is to fab a short metal filler pan for the rear. I had to sink the back bumper in closer than I really wanted to cover the body seam across the back.

Hang in there guys. I can't find any old pics of the bumper work, but I did finally find a factory exploded view of the front and rear bumpers. I will cut and paste, and make some notes for you.

Paul:

Are the oh-so-light bumper reinforcements included in the 150-pound weight loss??? From personal experience, I can agree with you, in regards to the weight of that sucker!!! LOL

This year, I am hopefully going to (finally) convert my rear bumper to a '68-'72 rear bumper. My best buddy will not stop giving me crap about my Omega's "Chevy pick-up truck rear bumper."

Does your gas tank fill between the tailights?
and are you going to change to a eariler gas tank to make it work with the 71-72 bumper?

Anyone have a straight rear bumper from '74 they would want to get rid of?
