Default 428 Ventura

The 428 is finally assembled and pre-oiled. Engine is bored .030", ported SD Performance heads, forged pistons, prepped rods, balanced, 10/1 compression, and an old Crane 246/254 hydraulic cam with Rhoades lifters, roller tip rockers. Performer RPM intake, Hooker headers with 3" purple hornies (turndowns). The car currently weighs 3310lbs, 3.08 gear, with 25" tall tires. The heads were painted VHT 1500 degree Silver prior to blue so it will be interesting to see what the paint does once its started. Plan to swap out the 350 this winter (then the 350 will be the next engine project).

I like the way the black M/T valve covers set off the blue block with the intake. Very anti-bling. Very good job.

Thanks for the compliment hectore3, I went with M/T valve covers as a tribute to Mickey Thompson as he was a Pontiac legend whom I admire. Even though my car has sort of a beater body, it will have a good looking engine under the hood with kickass performance.

I ended up replaceing the roller tip rocker arms with stainless full roller arms / polylocks. Polylocks wouldn't clear the M/T valve covers, went with some Moroso tall covers I had laying around instead. Might cut the polylocks down in the future to make them fit the M/T's but don't have access to a lathe right now. Got a 90 degree angle PCV valve and routed hose UNDER the RPM manifold.

Purple hornies painted to become BLACK MOMBAs (hehe). Hope they will be loud enough for this 428 to be heard.

Motor mounts to fit the older style 428 block (2 bolt holes instead of 5) for this 73 Ventura are from Oreilly's Anchor #2254 which is a '67 Firebird application. Same mount for both sides. Unlike A body GTO mounts which have horizontal pins each side, the Ventura mounts are a single bolt verticle from the bottom. When installed, the location of the passenger side mounting bolt is about an inch rearward of the drivers side which matches the mounts in the frame.

Trans is hanging from a single bolt in the firewall and using coathanger wire with ends twisted around the holes in the trans housing. Upon reassembly, I jack the trans up using a floor jack and cut the wire, then join and bolt the trans to the block. Automatic column shift linkage is to be removed to make way for headers. Plan to put a B&M ratchet floor shifter in its place.

Car originally had 3 crankshaft pulleys, but I removed the A/C pulley and put an extra plate on the inside to simulate thickness of the A/C pulley (same as outer plate which I had laying around) in its place for proper spacing and alignment with the water pump pulleys.

Here's a couple more pictures. A single bolt with a big washer goes up from the bottom through the large hole in the frame mount and threads into the engine mount.

Carefully trimmed gaskets for plenty of clearance around the bolt holes (easier installation), then glued them to the header flanges using Permatex High Temp Ultra Black and leaving them cure in the sun all afternoon.

Should be plent loud.

I ran my 462 with flowmasters 50's bolted directly to the headers for awhile. Set off every car alarm within a block radius just idling by.

Thanks for the pics guys, I need to try to find lower mounts for my car, anybody have an idea where to get some? The guy I bought my car from fabricated some mounts but the engine sits to far to the drivers side and tilts that way as well.Sorry I'm not trying to jack this thread hope you don't mind.

I wonder if 67-69 firebird mounts would work? Seems like there are many similarities between 1st gen Firebirds and Ventura II's.

Removed the A/C unit from the firewall. Broke most of the fender nuts for the inner fenderwell despite dousing them with PBblaster. Had to grind the heads off 3 of them. At least its out though. Eventually, I would like to have a working heater, and may leave the inside stuff intact. Tried contacting the AC Delete guys, but gave up on them as they don't answer phone, emails, etc. I notice a number stamped on the firewall behind the A/C box; could that be a VIN? I'll have to check it out.

I want the car to be all about the 428 engine with relatively high compression. Don't know of anyone else running purple hornies on a Pontiac, so dare to be different I guess.
